X-ray diffraction measurement by means of D2 phaser provides the material structures for powder samples. The analysis software installed with the system allows you to compare results against the XRD database and to understand the sample in depth. This course introduces the basic operation of Basic powder XRD measurements by means of D2 Phaser. Participants will learn how to use the instruments for powder/thin film samples for measurements. They will be taught how to prepare samples, use badger to book/enable/disable the D2 Phaser system, handle the instruments, understand the system status by using an Al2O3 (Corundum) sam- ple, and acquire and analyze the resulting data. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST who want to analyze samples to understand their structures. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

Raman spectroscopy provides chemical information of the molecules of interest (solid, thin film, powder, liquid, biomaterials). The technique is popular to un- derstand the structural information of semiconductors (Si based materials, 2D material, peroskite, etc.). This instrument is equipped with 325, 473, 633, and 785 nm (from UV to NIR region). This course introduces the basic operation of the Aramis Raman spectrometer. Participants will learn to use different lasers/gratings combinations depending on their requirements, and how to use the instruments for powder/liquid/thin film samples for Raman and PL measurements. They will be taught how to: use bad- ger to book/enable/disable the Raman spectrometer, prepare samples, handle objectives, calibrate the system using LabSpec 6 for Si substrate, use Labspec6 software to run/ acquire/ save the spectrum, and analyze the data.
