Trace Elemental Analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry
Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is a trace-level, elemental analysis technique that uses the emission spectra from a sample in high temperature plasma to identify and quantify the elemental com- position with detection limit at ppm level. This course introduces the fundamen- tal concepts and principles of ICP-OES analysis, including a discussion of its strengths, challenges, and typical applications. General guidance for solid sam- ple microwave digestion, sample introduction, instrument configuration, method development, software usage, and data process will be discussed. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a highly sensitive el- emental analysis technique capable of detecting metals and several non-metals at ppb to sub-ppb concentrations. This course intends to introduce the funda- mental concepts and principles of ICP-MS analysis, including a discussion of its strengths, challenges, and typical applications. General guidance for sample in- troduction, instrument configuration, software usage, method development, and data process will be discussed. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis.
