Plasma (Dry) Etching

Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) is a directional process used to remove material by reactive gas discharges or ion bombardment. The process is highly controllable and can be used to etch a variety of materials including semiconductors, dielec- trics, and metals. RIE has the advantage of being a highly anisotropic process which allows a finer resolution and higher aspect ratios when compared with other forms of etching. This course explains the plasma etching process. Participants will learn about tool setup and software, sample loading, set-up of recipes, operation modes, and understanding errors and tool-standby status. Analysis and interpretation of results will also be discussed. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST working in micro and nanofabrication. Model 626 was specifically designed for applications that require bonding at ex- treme height differences between first and second bond and for bonding wires to sensitive devices such as gallium arsenide FETs and LEDs. The 626 is a Deep Access, Long Reach Wire Bonder that can operate as a Wedge bonder. The 626 can be used for wire diameters from 0.5 to 3.0 mil (12 to 76µm) gold wire. Model 626’s motorized wire feed and wire clamping system provide superior wire control and allow the operator to increase or decrease tail length in 1 mil (25µm) increments at a touch of a switch. 626 shows actual units for setup of bond parameters. This course offers an introduction to the gold wire bonder. Participants will learn the standard operation procedure to operate the tool, and then practice on a gold-coated silicon sample. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST who are interested in bonding thin gold wires to small and temperature sensitive devices.
