Elemental Analysis Using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF)

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a non-destructive analytical technique suitable for rapid determination of the elemental composition of solid, liquid, and pow- der samples. It uses the interaction of x-rays with a substance to examine the sample’s characteristics by measuring the fluorescent X-ray emitted from it. This course introduces the fundamental concepts and principles of XRF, including a discussion of its strengths, challenges, and typical applications. General guid- ance for sample preparation, instrument configuration and software, experiment setup, and data process will be discussed. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

Freeze drying (lyophilization) is a low temperature dehydration process which removes water from frozen materials by directly converting frozen water into vapor without the intermediate formation of liquid water. It is especially suited for substances that are heat sensitive. This course introduces the basic principles of freeze drying. General guidance for sample preparation and instrument opera- tion will be discussed. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument.
