Sample Grind and Homogenization Using Planetary Ball Mill PM 200

The planetary ball mill is used to rapidly grind solid samples down to the nano range. It is capable of colloidal grinding and has the energy input necessary for mechanical alloying processes, allowing advanced materials development. This course introduces the basic principles and operation of the ball mill. General guidance for sample loading, instrument setup, usage, and cleaning will be dis- cussed. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

The STA 449 Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer is designed to simultaneously measure gravimetric change and energetic effects to a single sample under controlled temperature and atmospheric conditions. The coupling with a humidity generator is available as an advanced option to study drying processes or water absorption and desorption. This accessory allows users to analyze materials under defined conditions of temperature (20 °C to 1250 °C) and relative humidity (2-98 % RH). In addition, the coupling with a mass spectrometer is available as an advanced option, which provides mass spectra data from 0-300 amu range. This course introduces the general fundamental theory and technique, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this method and general guid- ance for its applications. It trains users on sample preparation, instruments and software usage, and data collection. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data anal- ysis. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. Knowledge of sample be- havior and its compatibility with the sample container is required. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account
