Headspace Gas Chromatograph Flame Ionization-Thermal Conductivity and Mass Spectrometry Detectors

The gas chromatograph is connected to a headspace sample introduction de- vice, a flame ionization detector, and a mass spectrometry detector. It is particu- larly useful for the separation, structural elucidation, and quantification of vol- atile and semi-volatile organic compounds. This course introduces the general theory of chemical separation and column choices, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this method and general guidance for its applica- tions. This training also includes discussions on sample preparation, instrument configuration, method development principles, and software usage. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instru- ment and perform basic data analysis. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

Gel Permeation Chromatograph is a classic tool for the measurement of average molecular weights and polydispersity index of polymers. This instrument is par- ticularly used for 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene-soluble polymers and it can be operated at elevated separation temperatures (up to 150 °C). This course introduces the general fundamental theory and technique of this method, including a discus- sion of its strengths and weaknesses, and general guidance for its application. It trains users on instrument configurations and software usage. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis.
