Purge and trap Gas Chromatograph Flame Ionization-Nitrogen Phosphorus and Mass Spectrometry Detectors

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometer is a widely used technique for the molecular weight measurement of synthetic molecules and polymers. It is especially useful for the determination of the mo- nomeric units, repeating unit numbers, and end groups in polymer samples. This course introduces the general theory of MALDI ionization, matrix, and cation agents selection, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this method and general guidance for its applications. This training also includes dis- cussions on sample preparation and software usage. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

The gas chromatograph is coupled with a purge & trap sample introduction device, a flame ionization detector, a nitrogen phosphorus detector, and a mass spectrometry detector. It is particularly useful for the separation, structural eluci- dation, and quantification of volatiles and semi-volatile organic compounds, such as volatiles in water, soil, and other matrices. This course introduces the general theory of chemical separation and column choices, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this method and general guidance for its applica- tions. This training also includes discussions on sample preparation, instrument configuration, method development principles, and software usage. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to independently operate the instru- ment and perform basic data analysis.
