Static Volumetric Chemisorption SOLIDS

Gas Sorption at Moderate and High Pressures

ASAP 2050 is a fully automated volumetric sorption analyzer which can measure single component sorption isotherms of a variety of light gases. It operates from vacuum up to pressures as high as 10 bar, in a range of temperatures from -30 °C to 150 °C. This course introduces the fundamental background theory and technique, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the meth- ods and general guidance for their applications. It trains users on the preparation and pretreatment of the samples, instrument operation, software usage, and gathering of data. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to inde- pendently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis.

Using gas as a surface probe, the chemisorption technique allows for the deter- mination of important properties of a catalyst such as percent of metal dispersion and active metal surface area. After catalyst activation and reduction, Static/vol- umetric chemisorption enables, starting an ultra low vacuum, tracing the adsorp- tion isotherm by dosing incremental amounts of an active gas (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, oxygen) onto the catalyst surface and monitoring its uptake at mono- layer level. This course offers an introduction to basic principles and hands-on training of the static chemisorption technique including sample preparation, apparatus description, switching apparatus from physisorption to chemisorption, setting up sample pretreatment and analysis method, data reduction, treatment, and interpretation. Following this course, the user is expected to be able to inde- pendently operate the instrument and perform basic data analysis.
