Introduction to Third Generation Sequencing Data and Quality Assessment

This course emphasizes the importance of assessing data quality for various downstream applications. In this context, we introduce the popular tool FastQC. We will discuss how to interpret the various reports generated by the tool, which is useful for analyzing data for different applications such as RNA-seq, amplicon sequencing, bisulfite sequencing, etc. Participants will learn through lectures, hands-on operation sessions, and group discussions. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry, who want to understand how to interpret FastQC statistics and plots. It is designed for NGS users. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

This course overviews the characteristics of sequencing data generated by third generation sequencing (TGS) technology. It introduces data formats used in TGS, assessment of quality, and potential quality issues in TGS datasets. Real use cases will be shown to understand and discuss differences between high- and low-quality datasets. Demos for running QC tools tuned for TGS datasets will be also presented. Participants will learn the basics of data quality control for TGS datasets through this course. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry, who want to learn basics of TGS datasets. Knowledge of genome science will aid understanding but is not necessary. It is designed for, but not limited to, TGS users. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account
