October 1, 1950 THE LORD'S SUPPER: A SYMBOL OF UNITY Luke 22:7-20; John 17:21; 1 Cor. 22:28, 29

The only thing which Christ ever asked of His people was that they “this do in remembrance of me.” He gave commands about going to preach and about forgiving our enemies and about hospitality and about knowing the Scrip tures but this one thing He asked for Himself and it is the only thing He asked. It is one of the four undeniable proofs of the Scripture. Millions of people could not be persuaded that Jesus ever gave the bread and the wine if the event never happened. He left a visible memorial because He knew our weakness and how prone we are to forget. The Lord Jesus gave both the bread and the wine. To withhold the wine is a sin against God. As we take these ele ments (as we do other food) into our body, they penetrate every part of the body as they enter the blood stream. They affect every part from head to feet. So as we partake of the Lord Jesus by faith and rejoice in His precious blood, He, too, affects every part of our body for Himself. He influences our feet, our hands, our heart, and our head. The entire person is to be controlled by the Lord Jesus and is to he utterly de voted to Him in holy consecration. Thus we are united to one another and to Him. We do not know how many grains of wheat are in the bread which we eat. We do not know how many grapes are in the juice we drink. However, we do know that all the grains are joined to gether to make the loaf and all the grapes are united to make the wine. Therefore, if we take the bread and the wine and shut out any of God’s people, The Lord’s Supper Represents Unity With Christ 1 Cor. 10:16 The Lord’s Supper Represents Unity With the Saints 1 Cor. 10:17

then we are telling an untruth and are misrepresenting completely that which we profess to believe. No saint who is walking with God can scripturally be de nied a place at the Lord’s Table by any one at any time. To do so is to deny the teaching of this service. The Lord’s Supper Represents Unity in Action Matt. 26:27 As we meet around the Lord’s table, there may be present people of many na tionalities. They come from every walk of life and every strata of society. They are one in Christ Jesus. As they take the bread and the wine, they indicate one desire—to know Christ Jesus fully and to be controlled by Him completely. The fellowship of Christians partaking of the Lord’s Supper represents a com mon desire to be all for God and to live for His glory. It represents the purpose of heart of each one to have the life per meated by the Lord Jesus until each one can say, “Not I, but Christ.” This is a union of hearts and a union of minds. The Lord’s Supper Represents Unity of Faith 1 Cor. 11:26 Only believers in Christ should come to the Lord’s Table. Only those who know Christ can remember Him. They confess that they are trusting wholly in the Lord Jesus to save them by His death at Calvary and the shedding of His precious blood. They confess that they are under the blood. They find that Christ Jesus satisfies their hearts and owns their souls. They are testifying that they believe God’s Word and there fore love God’s Son and have given themselves to God’s service. They con fess that they are not of the world but belong to Christ Jesus and belong to one another.
