says that “ Straightway [immediately] they forsook their nets, and followed him.” When Jesus had gone a little farther He saw James and his brother John in the ship mending their nets. When the Lord called them they immediately left their father and their servant and fol lowed Him. How these men must have loved their Saviour to leave everything to follow Him! Their desire must have been the same as that of the great missionary Paul, who said that his one desire was
or left alone according to one’s choice. It is not the kind of cross so often thought of which is a burden or sorrow one is forced to bear. Cross-bearing in Jesus’ words has to do with indentifica- tion with Christ, death to self, willing subjection to His will. Every believer has “his cross” in this sense. Each one has a life he can empty of self and give wholly to Jesus. Such a life really “finds” itself, becomes infinitely enriched. Answering the Call Mark 1:16-20 When a person becomes a Christian, Christ expects him to become a fisher of men. On this occasion when the call came to Peter and Andrew, James and John, there was a ready response. Straightway (key word of Mark) they left their occupations in order to enter His school of training for the task Jesus had in mind for them. The church needs more “ straightway” men and women today. Too often the church gets only the fragments of our time and talents. Let the men of this passage be an ex ample to all of us to heed Christ’s voice when it comes to us. That voice will never direct us wrongly. Magnifying the Lord Phil. 1:19-26 The heart of this passage is verse 21: “ For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” It is one of the best definitions of the Christian life anywhere to be found. While living upon earth Paul’s supreme desire was that Christ might live through him, controlling every mo tive and action. For some to live is to get wealth. For others it is to enjoy worldly pleasure. For still others it is to gain fame. But not so with Paul nor should it be with any true Christian. Like Paul every believer should have a passion to have his life Christ-controlled. For such death can only be' gain for it will usher the believer into the presence of Him who will abundantly reward such living. Helps for the Children A New Way for the Fishermen Mark 1:16-20; Phil. 1:19-26 Memory Verse: “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Along the shores of the sea of Galilee were many fishermen. Some were mend ing their nets; some were sitting in their boats; some were cleaning fish. As the Lord Jesus Christ walked along the shore, He saw two men, Simon and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea. The Saviour said to them, “ Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.” Perhaps some of the fishermen would have argued that they must work to support their fam ilies and to buy food and clothing for themselves. There were many excuses that they might have given. God’s Word
that Christ should be honored in his body whether it be by life or by death. To many, riches, fame, etc. are the most important things in the world. To these humble fishermen and to the great missionary, to live completely for their Lord was the only truly important thing in life. The Saviour said, “if ye love me, keep my commandments.” Those who can say, “ For to me to live is Christ” will rejoice in keeping His command ments regardless of where He asks them to go or what He asks them to do for His glory.
