Objects: A quart jar filled with sugar, and a large red cardboard cross. (When filling the jar, place close to the bottom the white hearts on which virtues, “ LOVE,” “ JOY,” “ PEACE,” “ LONG- S U F F E R I N G,” “ GENTLENESS,” “ GOODNESS,” “ F A I T H,” “ MEEK NESS,” and “ TEMPERANCE,” are written. Near the top, place black hearts on which sins are written.)

Objects: Two rubber bands, a board six inches wide and eighteen inches long, two nails, and a small gilt paper crown. (Draw a circle with a four-inch diameter at each end of the board. Color one black and the other white. In the black circle write the word “ SELF,” and in the white one, “ GOD’S WILL.” Drive a nail in the center of each circle. Tie a thread to the nail in the white circle, attach the golden crown to the other end of the thread, and conceal the crown back of the board. Kill the elasticity in one of the rubber bands by leaving it around a lighted electric bulb or in a slow oven. If time does not permit this, use a black thread, instead.) Lesson: One of these rubber bands is much better than the other. If you cannot tell by looking, how can you tell which is better? “ Test them by stretching.” You are right. Unless a rubber band will stretch it is worthless. I brought a board with which we shall test these rubber bands, and see which is the better. People are often tested. If they stand the test, God will use and reward them. ■ This board on which we will test the bands has two circles—one black and one white. The black one is marked “ SELF,” and the other one, “ GOD’S WILL.” We will hang the two rubber bands on the nail in the center of the black circle. Some people do not get beyond themselves. Everything they do is for self. When I try to stretch this band from “ SELF” to “ GOD’S WILL” it breaks. This other band reminds me of a Christian, who really prays from the heart what Christ taught His disciples in our lesson today, to pray . . . “THY WILL BE DONE.” It does not break when I stretch it into the circle marked “ GOD’S WILL.” It reminds me of a Christian who is willing to trust God, no matter what the test may be. In back of this circle there is a golden crown. All those who are willing to move out of “ SELF” into “ GOD’S WILL” will be rewarded.

Lesson: Who can guess what is in this jar? “ It is white, and might be sugar, salt or flour.” The first one you named is correct— it is sugar. There are three ways in which this jar of sugar is like a person. Two ways are apparent and the other will be revealed later. You have heard of some attractive people being spoken of as being sweet as sugar. This is one way in which this jar might be like an individual. The other way is that it has a mouth. Now let us take the sugar out to see the third way in which this jar is like a person. It has a heart, but notice, the word “LYING” is written on this black heart. Is it possible that a jar of sugar could have “ LYING” in it? Yes, and it is also possible that a person who might be called “ sweet” could have in his heart the sin of lying. As we continue to pour out the sugar, another black heart appears. It has “ STEALING” written on it. More are coming: “ HATE,” “ DECEIT,” “ SWEAR ING,” and “ANGER.” All these evil things came out of the mouth of the jar. The Bible says “ As he thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Prov. 23:7). “ Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matt. 12:34). We will, move this jar near the cross, reminding ourselves that only when we accept Christ will the heart be changed. (Gather up the black hearts and pin them to the red cross.) Now as we continue to pour the sugar out we see clean hearts with “ LOVE,” “JOY,” “ PEACE,” “ LONG-SUFFER- IN G,” “ GENTLENESS,” “ G OOD- NESS,” “ FAITH,” “MEEKNESS,” and “TEMPERANCE” written on them.
