be guarding an enemy line where the bridge had been. Nothing went right after that. The kids bawled to play with each other, and we wouldn’t let them. Harmony was gone from our household. Gray hairs speckled Alice’s brown braids. We not only quit praying for Al’s fam ily, but we could hardly tolerate their presence in the same church. There were other colossal unkindnesses beside the business of the church offering. Our lives grew drearier with the deepening hate of the feud between Christians and brothers until GOD SPOKE. Believe it or not, this is how it ac tually happened: The barn was almost loaded with first quality hay and the last loads were stretched out in windrows. At noon the boys and I hurried home for a dry lunch and a pot of coffee. “ No time for regular vittles or the rain will catch that hay on the ground,” I warned Alice. She had a kettle of old “ stand-by” smelling fragrant on the stove and a lunch of homemade bread reinforced with homesmoked ham when we came in from the field. We gobbled it hurriedly in the shade of a wagon and went to work again. The sky was threatening all afternoon, and we rushed right through with the job till the last load was in the mow. We had finished the chicken potpie supper that the women had fixed and were just finishing off with the pie and cake when the storm broke loose with a terrible bombardment. Strong flashes blinded the eyes and the guns of heaven shook the windows and doors. Suddenly, simultaneously, there came a blue flame and such a clap of thunder that the house trembled upon its stone foundation. An ear-splitting noise made us jump to the door. “ That struck our house or barns!” we told each other, startled. But no, the house was intact. The barns were all there when we could see through the blinding rain. But the great oak—the guardian of the little bridge— was down, split almost from top to bottom. I could hardly believe my eyes—half of the tree was fallen across the creek, just where the bridge had been! And upon that span of tree stood A1—my neighbor. He was bareheaded, without a coat, looking upward to the sky where the setting sun broke through the scat tering clouds. Forgotten was all my obstinacy. The old friendship flooded my soul. I clam bered upon the new bridge and met him there with outstretched hand. What a handshake! “Van, our war is over. God has spoken,” A1 said simply and this was nothing but the truth.
