July 2023 TPT Member Magazine

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA If it is July, it is officially summer in Minnesota. Independence Day brings family and friends together for picnics, swimming, camping and, if we are lucky, s’mores. I’m looking forward to spending some time on the St. Croix River with my family, canoeing—and I know my better half will be grilling burgers and brats. July 4th is a day of reflection. Public media provides a space where citizens can access educational civic resources on the issues most impacting our communities. For nearly 40 years, TPT’s Almanac has engaged residents, voters, and policymakers on important community matters. Almanac at the Capitol has given viewers an inside look at the workings of our state government for over 20 years. Our Minnesota Experience history productions – such as Citizen and Jim Crow of the North – help our community better understand how we got to today, and how we can work together to build the community we want in the future. July 4th is a day to remember what unites us. The Great American Recipe airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, and it gives us an opportunity to connect over food, share family stories, and celebrate the many traditions that make up our nation. A Capitol Fourth , a PBS tradition for over 40 years, brings us together in celebration through music and fireworks. You can watch the extravaganza on July 4 on TPT 2 at 7 p.m. In June, TPT hosted the Hype Showcase. Hype empowers local youth in grades 9-12 as media creators. This year’s Hype crew created powerful pieces that spoke about violence in schools, mental health, and representation in the arts. I have no doubt these Hype crew members will continue to share their stories and make great impacts on our community. You can learn more about Hype ’s impact on page 6 and view their projects at tpt.org/dont-believe-the-hype.
