personal evangelism by Benjam in Weiss H e seems to have a special gift in talking to other people about spiritual matters.” This was spoken by a person who had observed a counsellor dealing with an in quirer. It seemed so easy to the ob server. Results seemed to come so naturally and sure. Was it a gift or a special talent that he had? If you knew something about his personal spiritual life you would be convinced that it was a real gift, but that this ability also included a great deal of personal discipline. Every c a p a b l e counsellor has a deep sense of concern for others. It is more than merely helping them with some specific problem. He is convinced that an intimate relation ship with God is the biggest and that most effective thing he can offer to another person. Somehow this con cern has become a responsibility. While he is talking to another per son, he is concerned as to how he can turn the conversation into spiritual matters. This concern is not only about the actual winning of someone, but also it includes developing a first interest or in strengthening him in his spiritual life. The exercise of the spiritual coun sellor is daily witnessing. This is how he keeps his spiritual reflexes sharp and quick. It is quite a discipline to be constantly alert for an opportun ity to witness to someone. If no one is available who has never experi enced the miracle of re-birth, it may be another Christian. He tells him what God is doing for him and of the pleasures he has in doing His will. To do effective witnessing there must be something to tell. It isn’t just the repetition of something that happened quite some time ago or something heard at a conference or convention. It is something new and precious that may have come to you that very day in your Bible reading or prayer. If it is fresh and thrilling to you, it will be to the other person as well. Any vocation or activity that is effective is disciplined. It isn’t a mat ter of happenstance. Something is given to it. Something personal is put into it. Something that costs the in dividual is needed to make the spoken word effective in the heart and mind of another. To be effective as soul winners we must be disciplined persons, disci plined in the spirit and under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
