Arthur Southerland, Jr. 1929–2020 Engineer

tionally for work he did in analyzing and resolving the fires from hazardous waste in Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. In 1976, he accepted a position as a Supervisory Attorney with the EPA and moved the family to the Colorado frontier. In Denver, he advanced to serve the remainder of his career as an Administrative Judge for Region 8 where he was responsible for adjudicating envi- ronmental law. He retired in 2006 after 42 years with the federal government. A Life Member and active member for over 63 years, Smith was a longtime and loyal member of the Denver (CO) Alumni, where he actively served on the Board of Directors of Kappa Housing Inc. One of his proudest moments was the opening of the pioneering Kappa Tower, the first senior citizen housing building owned by a graduate chapter of a black greek organization in the US was dedicated in December of 1984. Smith was very instrumental in working with the Denver (CO) Alumni Scholarship Foundation that has underwritten over $1.3 million in scholarships since 1973 to high achieving young men matriculat- ing to college. Brother Al Smith was preceded in death by parents, sister Mary Margaret Vowels, brothers Henry A. (Patricia) Smith, III and William W. Smith, former wife Gloria L. Smith, and son William H. Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters Christiana Smith-Williams and Kimberly Ann Smith; grandson Jaylon Kahlil Fields, brother Robert F. Smith (Renate), sisters Sandra E. Edgecombe, and Joan R. (Richard) Braxton; brothers Thomas W. (Mary) Smith, Ronald E. (Helen) Smith, Ter- rence L. (Pamela) Smith, sister Melody A. (Milton) Irvin and brother Donald L. away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Southerland gradu- ated from Laurinburg Institute in 1948. A proud Aggie, he earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from A & T College in Greensboro, NC, in 1952. Southerland served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant. In 1978, he earned an M.S. degree in engineering administra- tion from George Washington University. Southerland worked on Naval Ship De- sign as a Naval Architect in Norfolk and Washington, DC. He led several design teams and mentored younger people in technical areas. He also held several patents. He retired in 1985, after 33 years. He co-owned Learning Ideas School Supply Store for 11 years. He worshipped at Asbury United Methodist Church since 1966. He served as the treasurer of the DC Chapter of the Na- tional Technical Association (NTA). He served as the treasurer of the DC Chap- ter of the National Technical Association (NTA). Southerland was a loyal member of the Washington Alumni chapter of North Carolina A&T State University. A Life Member, Southerland joined the Fraternity as Spring 1990 initiate of the Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter in the Spring of 1990. He, along with nine other men, was brought in on the ship “The Last Crusade.” He was affectionately known as ‘Old Milwaukee.’ Although Brother Souther- land did not hold any offices or chair- manships within the chapter, he was heralded as being just a ‘Good Brother.’ Arthur was proceeded in death by his parents Arthur, Sr. and Rossie (née Mc- Coy) Southerland brothers, James Louis

Alfred C. Smith, Esq. 1931-2019 Attorney, U.S. Army

Alfred Charles Smith was born in Portsmouth, OH on December 24, 1931 to Henry Al- bert Smith, Jr. and Viola (née Fields)

Smith. Brother Smith entered the Chapter Invisible on December 17, 2019 at the age of 87. Known to everyone as Al, attended high school in Lima, OH, and graduated from South High School. Smith earned a B.S. degree in bacteriology from the Ohio State University (OSU), a M.S. degree in chemistry from John Carroll University and a J.D. from Cleveland- Marshall College of Law. Brother While an OSU, Smith joined the Fraternity as a 1956 initiate the Zeta of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Smith also served in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1955 after serving in the Korean War. Brother Smith began his career working at the Cleveland Health Department as a Chemist before joining the Environ- mental Protection Agency as one of the first employees in 1966 as leader of the Response Team.
