Celebrating in Kappa Style: 100 Years of Achievement – The Xi Chapter Gala
The Steering Committee plans to host a formal black-tie Xi Chapter Cen- tennial Gala on September 11, 2021, at the luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington DC. The Gala will feature a closed Brothers-Only Historical Re- view Ceremony followed by a reception, formal dinner, and dance. Proceeds from the Gala will benefit future Xi Chapter Preservation Foundation initia- tives to include: a HU campus informa- tive plaque honoring the 15 th Grand Polemarch W. Henry “Stud” Greene (Xi 1923) . The committee plans to place the commemorative plaque at the HU stadium entrance that bears his name. Other plans include establishing a Xi Chapter Archive and Memorabilia room at the D.C. Historic Kappa House located at recently named Kappa Alpha Psi Way and underwriting the creation of a stained glass window representing the Fraternity at HU's historic Rankin Chapel. ect members, including an initial critical leader – George Dines (Xi 1950) , while enduring numerous university person- nel and policy changes. However, after three decades of fluctuating efforts, the HU President's Office granted final ap- proval on October 7, 2020. Brother Lemmie coordinated the fraternity campus marker’s design and approval with two prominent archi- tects, Harry Robinson FAIA (Xi 1961) and Jeffrey Jerrels AIA, (Xi 1984) , who managed the intricate design and fabrication of the marker. The project emphasized the symbolic factors regard- ing the Marker. First is the location of the planned marker. The committee intend to strategically locate the marker on the main HU campus within steps of the original Kappa Tree where brothers have historically gathered over decades. Next, the marker’s form would have a circular shape which embodies our Bond and continuous circle of brotherhood. The marker would lay upon a firm crim- son and cream color granite foundation with a bronze plaque highlighting each of the Fraternity Founders, Xi Charter Members and the Xi Charter Initiates – all centered around the Kappa Alpha Psi Coat of Arms. Finally, the marker’s two-tiered structure would represent the synonymous names of Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Nu Pi, while the 3-foot diam-
eter and the 3-inch tiers would represent the three letters of the Fraternity.
Once designed, HU, including the Presidents’ Office, required a compre- hensive approval process for the marker. The Marker Development team, assisted by Brother Dennis, managed the process and worked closely with the HU admin- istration. The Steering Committee and HU are scheduling the installation of the historical campus marker to occur in Spring 2021. Ensuring a Legacy – A Kappa Alpha Psi, Xi Chapter Endowed Scholarship at Howard University Xi Chapter Brothers have always been actively involved on the HU cam- pus and have a special appreciation and Bison Love for this historic institution. Therefore, in creating plans for the Cen- tennial Anniversary, Brothers wanted to ensure they gave something back to their beloved institution that would reflect their sentiments and benefit HU in perpetuity. Consequently, approximately 50 Xi Chapter initiates underwrote $100,000 to establish the Kappa Alpha Psi, Xi Chapter Endowed Scholarship gifted via the Xi Chapter Preservation Foundation to HU.
