THE DALLAS (TX) ALUMNI CHAPTER CELEBRATES 85 YEARS
ington (DC) Alumni, and Los Angeles (CA) Alumni boasted having their own "Kappa Kastles." DAC would soon join their ranks. Based on the chapter's research of the marketplace, DAC agreed that the time was right to buy a house. Brothers Alford and Lattimore scouted potential locations in Dallas. In December 1990, DAC settled on an existing structure located on 2515 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in southeast Dallas near the vener- able Cotton Bowl, placing the down payment with funds generated from the DAC life membership program. Six years later, DAC celebrated a mortgage burning ceremony at the house following a Founders' Day observance. The chapter uses the facility to conduct meetings twice a month, host social gatherings and initiation ceremonies, host Guide Right and Kappa League activities, preserve important documents and store equipment, and display awards and photos. The facility is the head- quarters for our Guide Right Founda- tion of Dallas, Inc. The Dallas Alumni House quickly became a landmark on what would become a modern-day "Black Greek Row in the heart of South
Dallas with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. followed suit with houses nearby.
Conclusion
After eighty-five years, The Dallas (TX) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is a fixture in the Dallas community and a leader among local DFW volunteer organizations. Its flagship service program, the Kappa League, continues to produce out- standing young men most pursuing a college education. Some of our Kappa Leaguers have become Kappa Men. DAC's other community involve- ment programming includes: People Helping People senior citizen home im- provement projects, Youth Leadership and Career Development Seminars, Prostate Health Screenings, Voter Reg- istration Campaigns, Holiday Basket Giveaways as well as our spearheading of Kappa Kamp, academic scholar- ships, and the various endeavors of the Guide Right Foundation of Dallas, Inc. have helped our chapter integrate the fabric of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metro- plex and position ourselves as catalysts for positive change. Our history is still in the making….
Kappa Kamp Support
Led by National Kappa Kamp Chair- man and past DAC Polemarch Maurice West (Lambda Lambda 1988), DAC works alongside the six other DFW alumni chapters (Ft. Worth , Arlington- Grand Prairie, Richardson-Plano, Man- sfield-Cedar Hill, Denton-Lewisville, Commerce-Greenville) and undergradu- ate chapters (Iota Alpha, Eta Phi, Kappa Epsilon, Lambda Lambda, and Nu Beta) to serve as local hosts for the annual Kappa Kamp Summer Enrichment Program. The program provides Kappa Kamp is an enrichment camp that focus- es on College Readiness, Business and Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and Team Building. The young men who attend Kappa Kamp acquire life skills through intensive workshops and learning through structured play activi- ties. Kampers are immersed in different backgrounds with a variety of cultural activities, field trips, and lectures. The program annually brings 120 young men from across the nation to Paul Quinn College for a two-week experience.
