Dr. Martin T. Tyler
Dr. Martin T. Tyler (Delta 1965) was born in Nashville, Tennessee and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. After enjoying athletic success in the Cincinnati public schools, he attended Ohio University and majored in Zoology in the pre-dentistry program. He is a charter member of Epsilon Lambda. Brother Tyler completed his dentistry studies at Howard University and completed a dental internship at McGill University. After his internship, he entered the U.S. Navy, with tours in Newport, R.I., three years in Sidi Yahia, Morocco, Great Lakes, IL and Bethesda, Maryland.
In 1977, Brother Tyler was the first African American to be accepted for a residency in the specialty of Oral Medicine at the Navy’s prestigious post-graduate dental school, The National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda. During his final active duty tour at Bethesda, Brother Tyler earned a master’s degree in Higher Education from George Washington University and successfully completed the Boards of Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology. In 1979 he was the first African American appointed to the full-time teaching faculty of the National Naval Dental Center in its 65-year history; the Naval Dental School opened in 1912. After being retained to teach in the post-graduate program at Bethesda and serving as visiting professor at his Alma Mater, Howard University, Brother Tyler was recruited by the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry. He became the first African American to head a division at the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry. He became a tenured professor, and upon retire- ment from full-time teaching, he was unanimously nominated by the 2003 graduating class of McGill dental students to receive the W.W. Wood Award—a national award for teaching excellence sponsored by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry. Brother Tyler continued to volunteer to direct the McGill dental residents in the care of oral cancer patients at the Montreal General Hospital/McGill University Health Center. In addition, he ran a private referral practice of Oral Medicine in Mon- treal until 2019 After serving as the Commanding Officer of two Naval Dental Reserve units, Brother Tyler retired from the U.S. Naval Re- serve, earning the rank of Navy Captain (O-6), with 28 years of Navy service.
Michael Williams
Michael Williams (Omega 1999) was born and raised in Brampton Ontario, Canada as one of eight siblings. He is of Caribbean decent, his mother from Jamaica and father from Grenada. As a child, Brother Wil- liams excelled in sports and following the path of his older brother, Marlon. He played soccer for three years before moving to track and field, where he excelled--setting the U15 400 meter Ontario Track and Field record of (51.24 seconds).
Upon completion of high school, in 1997, he earned a scholarship to Drake University. Under the coach- ing of coach Doug Case, Brother Williams excelled in his freshman year, shaving over a second off his 200 meter time, with a personal best of 21.21 seconds during the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. He transferred to Ball State University, continuing on his track scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing. Brother Williams is a Project Manager at Rogers Communications. He was selected for the Ted Rogers Awards for excellence in 2019. Michael currently resides with his wife, Angela, and two children, Yasmeen and Jayda, in Kitchener Ontario, Canada.
