Dr. Carl Goodman Becomes Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of Bowie State University

An effective champion of student success, he made remarkable achievements to enhance the under- graduate education and student success areas, improving FAMU’s six-year grad- uation rate by nearly 15 percent in four years, retention rates and the reduction of excess credit hours. He accomplished those outcomes by implementing the university’s first Early Alert System and a Finish in Four Program to improve the four-year graduation rates. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Goodman enjoyed more than 20 years of a distinguished career in teaching, re- search, and service in FAMU’s flagship program, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. As Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Stud- ies and as the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division Director, he restructured a vibrant graduate program through fac- ulty development and key hires, student recruitment, as well as developed a new Bachelor of Science program in the pharmaceutical sciences. Dr. Goodman has a strong track record as an effective fundraiser, generating more than $39 million in research and student training grants to strengthen FAMU’s research

He was respon- sible for assuring the quality of aca- demic programs and curricula reviews, self-study reports and specialized ac-

Dr. Goodman has extensive experi- ence as a researcher on grant-funded programs and is passionate about providing research opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. As co-principal investigator for the FAMU Research Centers in Minor- ity Institutions Program, he directed a $14.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institution for Minority Health and Health Disparity. He has co-au- thored or authored more than 39 peer- reviewed articles. His research interest includes the molecular and cellular basis of opioid tolerance and addiction. Dr. Goodman holds a doctoral degree in Pharmacology/Toxicology from Florida A&M University and a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology from Jackson- ville University. He was a postdoctoral NIH fellow at the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
