Tasmanian Tourism Market Overview.

Statistics & Highlights (Pre-Covid) In October 2019, the Hobart airport was sold to QIC and the Netherland’s Royal Schiphol Group, who have started work on doubling the size of the airport’s terminal and adding international flights as soon as possible. A total of 1.32 million people visited Tasmania on sched- uled air and sea services during the year ended Decem- ber 2019. This does not include cruise ship visitors. Total spending by visitors to Tasmania increased to $2.53 billion, up by 5%, at an average spend of $1,911 per visitor. Total nights were 10.82 million. The number of interstate visitors to Tasmania increased to 1.13 million, up by 4%, and the number of international visitors decreased to 293,000 - down 4%. Out of the total number of interstate visitors, an estimated 483,400 people visited Tasmania for a holiday; 306,000 came to visit friends or relatives; 216,600 were traveling for business reasons; and 34,600 visited Tasmania to attend a conference or convention. Insights from the latest visitor survey from Tourism Tas- mania reveal the Apple Isle has surpassed Queensland as Australia’s most appealing holiday destination, with good food, drink and scenery among the top selling points. Please note: The above statistics were the latest avail- able prior to the impact of Covid-19.

Statistics & Highlights (Post-Covid) Tasmania’s borders finally opened full time from 15th December 2021. The latest Tasmanian Tourism snapshot is for the year ending December 2022. As with all destinations globally, Tasmania saw declines in visitation due to Covid 19. The state has enjoyed a buoy- ant recovery through 2022 and 2023, with no periods of restricted domestic borders and international travel resuming early in the year. For the year ending December 2022, there were 1,191,500 visitors to Tasmania, representing 90% of the level of visitors pre Covid (for the year ending December 2019). These visitors stayed 11.15 million nights in the state and spent $3.476 billion. Although international visitors have been increasingly returning to the state, visitation overall was overwhelm- ingly interstate visitors (93%) with 1,111,400 mainland Australians visiting the state. Direct Hobart to Auckland flights resumed in July 2022, re-opening a direct gateway to New Zealand and a single stop from North America. So in summary, Tasmania is performing extremely well and once our international visitors return to our shores, the State Government is confident that the 2019 record level of 1.32 million visitors will be surpassed.
