2023 Musana Annual Report

DEAR MUSANA FAMILY,

September 16th, 2023 marked 15 years since we first rescued 80 children from an abusive and broken orphanage and brought them to Musana. The beginning years of running a children’s home were filled with learning and unlearning. We were exposed to the underbelly of charity and the unintended consequences that aid has caused in

low-income developing communities. We experienced firsthand how the dependency mentality has prevented local initiative and enterprise development. We began to understand that if we truly wanted to see communities lifted out of poverty, the approach needed to change from charity and aid to investing in long-term sustainable solutions with the local people leading their own development. After 15 years, it has been incredible to see the impact Musana’s unique model has had on transforming communities!

The word we used to sum up 2022 was “Growth.” The word to sum up 2023 is “Quality!” In education, Musana runs six day and boarding primary and high schools. Our primary schools in Iganga and Kaliro had the best performances in their districts on the Primary Leaving Exams (PLE). In healthcare, we operate two comprehensive hospitals. Our hospital in Iganga was voted the best private health facility in the region by the Busoga Health Forum. We are proud to be known as an organization that provides not just affordable, but also quality services to the communities we serve! Because of our unique model of sustainability, in 2023 we were able to generate $2,907,520 of local income to cover 95% of our total operating budget, including all outreach programs! In Iganga alone, we generated profits of $409,746, proving that our model works and that low-income communities can flourish independently without outside aid. The profits were then plowed into the community through scholarships and free medical services. This sustainability model allowed your donations to scale our impact to reach more lives! In 2023, you invested more into capital infrastructure than any year to date… your largest investments were made in Musana Vocational High School in Kaliro which opened to students on January 30, 2023, and Musana Community Hospital in Kamuli which opened on April 1, 2024. You helped us to construct, furnish, and open a new Guesthouse in Kaliro which is another income-generating business! Reflecting on the past 15 years, we are overwhelmed by how God used a simple decision to rescue 80 children to build a locally led, owned, and sustained organization that is impacting hundreds of thousands of lives! He has brought a lavish and abundant harvest! Thank you for investing in a long-term sustainable solution that is lifting communities out of poverty. Together, we will continue to build a world free of dependency and full of dignity!
