Jeanne Charlebois was born into Ottawa in a big family. With six brothers and four sisters, life was always lively. Shemoved to Hawkesbury in 1968, went back to Ottawa for a few years, and came back in 1973. “I love Ottawa. It’s where I grew up,” said Charlebois. “But this is home.” Charlebois attendedHawkesbury District High School for Grade 11, 12, and 13. She worked inOttawa for the federal government for a few years, got married, and came home. In 1975, Charlebois became a clerk- treasurer for Longueuil. In 1998, Longueuil became part of the Champlain Township, and Charlebois continued to work for the township until 2006 when she retired to become Mayor of Hawkesbury. “I was introduced into politics withmy job as clerk- treasurer,” said Charlebois. “I never thought I would go into politics.” Even at a young age, Charlebois says she was opinionated and independent. “My mother used to tell me I was a lot like Charlotte Whitton, Ottawa’s first female mayor,” said Charlebois. “That womanmust have impressedme. Awoman being the first femalemayor was quite something in those days. It was inspiring.” Besides beingmayor, Charlebois spends much of her time helping out local charities andnon-profit organizations. She ispresident of the board of directors for the Hawkesbury Food Bank and for Maison Interlude. She also works with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Prescott Russell residence, and is involved

is to have an open door for those who need it. “Everybody appreciates the volunteers. I can’t believe the help we have gotten.” “I am so proud to be the mayor of this town,” beamed Charlebois. “To see a community with a heart, the work done by the firemen, Valoris, Communities that Care (CTC), United Way, La Maison de la Famille, and so many volunteers, it is just so heart warming. I respect them so much. You don’t see how much is here until you get involved in it.” Charlebois said the coming years in her term as mayor of Hawkesbury will see hard work and continued support. “We’ve got a heck of a team here,” said Charlebois. “We have members in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties. It’s a really good mix. When there is a decision to be made, we hear opinions fromdifferent generations. We come to a decision that we all can live with. There is a good crossover.” “It’s a good time for Hawkesbury,” explained Charlebois. “We are seeing second and third generations of families staying here. We have a very vocal community, which is good. They tell me we have to control spending, and clean up our parks. There are good people here that care about their community. We came up with a plan, and people responded.” Charlebois loves living in this area and says she is happy where she is at this point in her life. “I’mhere. I want to live and work here and make it a better place.”

in other community events. “I am very busy. But it is all team work,” explained Charlebois. “Nobody does this alone. You have to be part of a team to make things work. It has been very fulfilling. We have such respect for one another. For that we succeed.” Charlebois says she has
