SadieWaldron - “Pheasant Restoration in Iowa” (session 9) The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus) was first released in Iowa in 1900, followed by statewide distribution in 1910. Early on, pheasants thrived in northwest and north central Iowa. This is still true today, with southern Iowa’s pheasant population struggling to increase. One of the greatest declines in the population across the state was from 2007 to 2011 due to overly wet and cold winter and spring seasons, as well as continued habitat loss. The Iowa DNR and Pheasants Forever have been working with private landowners to increase and maintain CRP ground for pheasant habitat restoration. DarionWeber - “Setbacks and Comebacks in the Therapeutic Process of PTSD” (session 20) Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing a terrifying or threatening event. Treatment of the disorder encompasses different types of trauma-focused psychotherapy and medications to manage symptoms. PTSD therapy has three main goals: improve symptoms, teach skills to grow through the trauma, and restore self-esteem. Recovery from PTSD is not a linear process; setbacks can occur when the client is presented with retraumatization of similar events. This paper will show the various applied therapeutic techniques on a current client with PTSD and display the impact of lessening symptoms when additional trauma was thrown into the mix. KaraWelch - “Student Self Assessment and Understanding: What Causes Learning Issues” (poster session) The research for this study gathers information from students that is collected from surveys that have been emailed to them. The survey will collect data in the following areas daily life, study skills, mental and learning disabilities, academic future, and language, homelessness, and work barriers. This information will then be used to understand what areas are causing students problems in learning the required material for their classes. While filling out the survey questions students might realize problem areas that they have that are impacting their learning. The results will also be beneficial for colleges to find out problem areas that impact student learning. Colleges can use this information to create programs that will help students in these different areas.
