An interconnected Wor ld

Thank you for taking the time to find out about Clyde & Co. It is my role to tell you more about our firm. You will no doubt be looking at a number of different law firms. We think there are a number of things that are distinctive about Clyde & Co. The first of these is our international reach and heritage. Of course lots of law firms are international these days but there are not many that are quite as international as us. With nearly 50 offices on six continents, we are the largest single partnership law firm by number of locations. That is no accident. Our international outlook has been part of who we are for a long time. We’ve been in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America for over 25 years. We’ve been in Africa and the United States, the world’s largest legal market, for a decade. This matters because in today’s increasingly global and interconnected world, we find that our clients want advisors that understand the international landscape. A second differentiator is the work we do. Like most of our competitors, we have a full range of practice areas across all aspects of dispute resolution and in corporate & commercial work. But we don’t just stop there. We also have a very defined sector focus. We specialise in the sectors that move (marine, aviation, trading), that build (infrastructure), that power (energy, commodities) and that protect (insurance) our global and interconnected world and underpin global trade and commerce. This matters because, when we speak to our clients we are not just speaking as experts in the law but as experts in their industries too. We find that our clients appreciate that approach.

Finally, we are a law firm that thinks hard about the future. We know that the world we live in is changing. The risks facing international business are more varied and complex than ever before. The impact of technology and the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution will have an effect on all our lives. Our approach is not to hide away from these changes but to tackle them head on. We are committed to innovation. We are committed to understanding how these changes will play out in our clients’ industries. We want to be at the forefront of helping our clients navigate those changes.

If this interests you, we would be delighted to tell you more.

What do we look for? We recruit approximately 55 trainees each year across our London, Manchester, Scotland and MENA offices. We welcome applications from both law and non-law backgrounds and look for intelligent and motivated graduates with good academic qualifications and excellent communication skills.

In considering different firms, ask yourself what is it about the firm that interests you and why do you think you would be a good fit for the firm. While you wait to hear the outcome of your application, don’t stop researching and exploring your interest in the firm. Continue to keep abreast of the firm through the website and the legal press. If your application is successful we will be in touch to invite you in for an assessment centre. Owing to the volume of applications we receive, it is not possible for us to offer each candidate individual feedback on their unsuccessful application.

Trainees must be able to work independently or as part of a team, and are expected to display common sense and initiative. An appreciation of the client’s commercial interests is essential. Although we prefer our candidates to have at least a 2.1 degree, we do take mitigating circumstances into account. We also consider applications from those who have graduated and are at different stages of their career. The key to a good application form is spending time researching the firm. Try to go beyond the graduate recruitment brochures and firmwebsites. Visiting law fairs, careers fairs, open days and other external events are good ways of getting more detailed insights and a feel for the firm you are applying to.

A l ife experience Clyde & Community Our Clyde & Community programme uses the unique set of skills of our lawyers and business support staff to tackle social issues local to each of our offices and to help disadvantaged communities – through the provision of practical help, financial support and strategic leadership. Most of our trainees, as well as the future trainees currently at law school, participate in pro bono of some kind and find that very often it gives them a highly rewarding and different perspective on how the law can make a positive impact on people’s lives. They also find that they gain a valuable insight in terms of developing their confidence and ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, which are vital skills for any well-rounded lawyer. The firm has a global policy that up to 50 hours of firm-approved pro bono activities will be credited towards fee earners’ billable targets and, as such, these hours are treated as chargeable work. Clyde & Community is centred on two major themes: Access to Justice, through the provision of free legal assistance and Inspiring Young Lives, supporting education, employment, future talent and entrepreneurship. Access to Justice As a major international firm, we have a role to play in enabling communities around the world to secure fair access to legal advice and justice. Community legal clinics are a vital part of the framework by which individuals are able to access legal advice where they would otherwise not be able to afford representation. Clyde & Co lawyers provide advice in person, via Skype or telephone, as well as full casework assistance and governance advice to community legal clinics from our offices around the world. Some examples include: Our Employment and Immigration teams in London and Manchester run an award winning Skype Legal clinic at Brent Citizens Advice Bureau. The weekly clinic deals with the increasing number of employment and immigration law queries, following the cuts to civil legal aid.

Our Dubai office was a founding firm of the first pro bono court in the UAE and was the recipient of the first Access to Justice Award in recognition of our support and involvement. Our New York and Sydney Offices have working together support the setup of The Ernie Deomampo Charitiable Trust in Australia along with its non-profit entity, Relief Brigade in the US. Inspiring Young Lives Not everyone has the same opportunities or equal access to education and employment. We work to encourage young people from less privileged backgrounds to aim higher in their education and careers. We partner with schools, colleges, community groups and universities to create more opportunities for young people from less privileged backgrounds and to also encourage those young people to aim higher in education and in their careers. Staff in our local offices around the world volunteer in: business-mentoring, literacy, numeracy and chess programmes with their local schools. For example in Manchester we have a reading partnership with Holy Trinity Primary School and in London we provide business mentors to Year 12 students from Stepney Green Sixth Form College. Charity Partners Our global charitable theme is ‘Inspiring Young Lives’. Clyde & Co offices around the world are encouraged to work with, and to support, local charities whose activities fall within this theme. We also make donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee when appeals are made for assistance, this past year we assisted with the Yemen Crisis Appeal. Some of the charities recently supported worldwide include: Inspiring Sports - Hong Kong, Bear Cottage – Sydney, Orbis - Qatar, Legal Services for Children – San Francisco, Le Phare – Montreal Lawyers Feed the Hungry – Toronto and Malamulele Onward – Johannesburg. On 15th September 2017, we hosted our first global charity challenge day – Follow the Sun. We had over 20 offices participating in a succession of physical activities, such as cycling, treks and ping pong tournaments from Sydney to San Francisco.

24

Our charity partnership Every three years the firm votes for its UK 3-year charity partner. We are currently working with Together for Short Lives (TfSL), the leading charity for 53 children’s hospice services across the UK. Each Clyde & Co UK office is twinned with a local hospice. Throughout the partnership staff will have the opportunity to volunteer at their local hospices as well as take part in charity challenge events in support of TfSL.

Art in the City The Clyde & Co Art Award is an annual community project, which encourages and nurtures emerging talent in the visual arts by introducing final year art undergraduates to the corporate sector and showcasing their work. This award winning project aims to ease the transition from art school to the commercial art world – a stepping stone to a professional career. Each artist selected is awarded a cash prize, pro bono legal support and business mentoring during the year that their work is on display. Many of our staff have volunteered to participate with this project, either acting as mentors to the artists or providing specific legal advice and training. Our Dubai, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and San Francisco offices also run the Art Award project.

Not al l work

We promote regular sports and social events, so that people in different parts of the firm have a chance to meet and stay in contact with each other. We currently have cricket, football, golf, rugby, tennis, netball teams and most recently, a mixed speednet team. These teams are open to everyone in the firm including our future trainees as well as the Vacation Scheme students. The firm also offers a subsided sports club membership. If you are musical, you can join the firm’s choir or perhaps be part of the Clyde & Co Rock ‘n’ Roll Band - WIPlash

I play the trombone in the Clyde & Co band, WIPlash! We have previously performed at ‘LawRocks’ charity gigs; at both the 100 Club in Oxford Street (competing against other law firms in a ‘battle of the bands’ style format, our next gig here is October 2017) and in Vienna (at the IBA Annual Conference). We have also played the firm’s Christmas party and performed at an Associate’s wedding. Being part of the band is a great way of getting involved with the firm. Clyde & Co is aware of the need for its staff to have a good work-life balance in order to be both happy and productive. The various clubs and societies that the firm has to offer each go some way in helping to achieve this balance, whilst also providing multiple networking opportunities both internally with fellow colleagues and externally with clients and competitors. Sarah Pearson, Associate The Clyde & Co choir, which rehearses in the run up to Christmas, brings people together from across the business. The choir provides a fantastic opportunity to get out of the office in your lunch break and really enjoy yourself. We take anybody with enthusiasm – whilst some members are ex-choral scholars, others have never sung in a choir before. The rehearsals culminate in the Carol Service which is very popular with colleagues and clients alike. Everyone has a really good time. Jonathan Cockerill, Associate Clyde & Co has a reassuringly competitive but sociable hockey team that participates in ad-hoc games against clients and other businesses as well as more formal Leagues. It’s a great opportunity to build relationships with colleagues and clients whilst playing some sport across the city! Sophie Nehammer, Trainee Solicitor

The firms retells the life stories of nine girls from the developing works, who struggle every day for freedom, education and a voice in their home countries.. Stonewall LGBT* - How to be a good ally Training sessions are offered to staff, such as our hosting of a session from Stonewall on ‘How to be a good ally’. Stonewall is a UK charity committed to empowering individuals, transforming institutions and changing laws. The engaging session offered guidance on how you can ensure that LGBT+ colleagues, friends and family have a supportive and inclusive environment in which they can be accepted without exception. Mental Health Week In support of mental health week, our London office championed the Green Ribbon Campaign – a Lord Mayor’s Appeal to promote open conversation and end the stigma of mental health. External Partnerships We value our key external partnerships with Aspiring Solicitors and Bright Network. We are proud to co-sponsor AS Pride on 23 November.

At Clyde & Co we view diversity and inclusion as critical to the international nature of our business and welcome applications from anyone, regardless of background. A diverse business delivers better products and services to clients and creates a more positive culture, enabling and encouraging different opinions, mindsets and backgrounds that can grow and develop a different perspective. We want all our people to feel able to be themselves at work. Equally our workforce must be representative of the communities and rich culture in which we live and work. In July 2017 we appointed Andy Dent as Global Head of Inclusion. We encourage all employees to get involved with our diversity initiatives which are focused on five key areas: • Gender diversity • LGBT+ • Wellness, mental health and disability • Cultural and ethnic diversity • Social mobility At Clyde & Co we view diversity as critical to the international nature of our business. We are working hard to sustain and develop an inclusive culture for all of our employees and a diverse workforce that is fully representative of the communities and rich cultures in which we live and work.
