Arbor Gallery presents Denis Godbout exhibit
AMontréal artist, with a wide-ranging pal- ette of methods for displaying his artistic impulse, is the focus of a spring exhibition at the Arbor Gallery in Vankleek Hill. The gallery presents a retrospective exhi- bition of the works of Denis Godbout, April 27 to June 26, with a vernissage on April 30, in the afternoon, for art lovers interested in purchasing any of his works. Godbout was a Montréal artist whose works reflected “a tumultuous life filled with passion, reflection and sometimes subtle humour” according to the program bro- chure. The exhibition will present a variety of works from several periods of Godbout’s creative life, displaying both his wide range of artistic styles and themultitude of sources for his creative vision. The various prints included stem from the 1980s, during his days as a visual arts student at the Université du Québec à Montréal. He later completed his Master’s degree in 1993 and many of his early works demonstrate his creative “quotes” from various sources, such as the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. A number of the works in the exhibition are self-portraits, a style of self-expression that Godbout returned to several times dur- ing his career. Many of his landscape works presented a “cropped view” of the natural world. Numerous pieces done on either wood or canvas demonstrate his aesthetic interest in animals, including cats, dogs, bulls, buffalo, and other species, which of- fered himopportunities to play with colour in various combinations. The retrospective will present examples of Godbout’s creative talent in a wide range of media, frompainting to drawing to print- making. “The richness of texture in his works brings forth a brute force, a true expression of this multi-talented artist.” Arbor Gallery is at 36 Home Avenue in Vankleek Hill.
