land of Syria; saints in the household of the vilest of the Roman Emperorsllall bear witness to the fallacy and idleness of the excuse. If men could serve God under such conditions as those, they can serve Him anywhere. Christianity is independent of circumstances; Christ is stronger than environment. Grace can enable' us to stand firm amid all temptations and to win the victory over the foes, who encircle us, however numerous or how ever strong they may be. The God who delivered Joseph from the Egyptian dungeon and Daniel from the lion’s den is able to save us from all the powers of Hell. There is no position in which we may not live as His children,- so long as we dre lawfully engaged in it—if there be any, it is proof that we have no busi ness to be found therein. There are triumphs to be won for Christ everywhere, but the most brilliant victory, and therefore the greatest honor, is to be obtained by manifesting a saintly life “in Caesar’s household.” THORNS are nature’s mistakes and shortcomings; they are branches or buds that have failed to develop* not parts of the original plan of the plant on which they grow. Thorns are the consequence of sin; it was not till Adam fell that they were first produced. Thorns are the causes of toil and pain; wearily they must be eliminated from the soil, sorely they pierce the tender flesh. Remembering these facts, let us gaze at the head of the crucified Redeemer: lo, that head is encircled with a diadem of thorns. He wears the emblems of sin, and failure, and weari ness, and pain, upon His sacred brow. Is it not to teach us that He has taken these things and borne them in our stead? “He bare our sins in his own body on the tree” ; yea* and not only our sins, but our mistakes, our exhaustion, our woe. He bore our sins that we might be freed from their consequences and their dominion. He bare our failures, our weakness (for sweat, which is connected in the curse with thorns, ef. Gen. 3 :18, 19, is a sign of weakness), and our pains that, if not delivered from them, we might be saved from their direst results. They pierced His head that henceforth they might only wound our feet. Truly an all-inclusive salvation has been worked out for us by Christ ! THE worldling laughs at passages in the Bible like this: he thinks he knows them to be false. How many godly men and women there are. whose lives are full, not of prosperity, but of failure. Poor, -despised, downtrodden; disaster seems to have dogged them all their days; they have succeeded in nothing. So he thinks: so, on a superficial glance, it appears to be. But what is failure, and what is success? Was Dives a success? Was Lazarus a failure? Where is the record of true prosperity? Is it on earth or in heaven? A man writes a book; the publishers declare it “a frost” ; one soul, however, is blessed to all eter nity by its perusal: has the author’s work really failed, or did it succeed? One of the things that we shall have to learn on the other side of the flood will be to revise our estimate of fail- F ebruary 21. “The crown of thorns.” — Ino. 19:5.
