for the Christian Life

of all God’s works? That which is true in the world of nature is true also in the realm of Grace, Brass bands and banners, flaming- posters,., crowds and fervid excitement—these things may have their place in preparing the way for the Kingdom; but they do not connote its advent, and we shall err greatly if we imagine that they, or any of them, are .necessary to its arrival. Soft as. the zephyr, unnoticed as the sap rising in the tree, silent as the track of a planet, mysterious as the ether; such is the advent of the spiritual life in .the heart of man. We do not see the grain of wheat germinate'in the ground, .we catch no glimpse of the electric wave bearing our message from shore to shore; yet these things come to pass; 3 Do not let us be discouraged if silence waits upon our spiritual.;efforts—God’s, mills*.¡make no clack. THIS is not a permission but. a commandment. Work was God’s original plan for men. Some people imagine it to have been part of the Eden curse, but God put the man into the garden “to dress it and to keep it” before the Fall: the curse was not “work,” but “toil ”—yoeary work, work amid physical weakness, work pro ducing sweat. Labor is not a curse, but a blessing; unhappy is the man who cannot of .who will not work. To work is’to be Godlike, Christlike; “My Father worketh hitherto and I work.” It is to be in harmony with the Universe, for “All things work together,” literally as well as metaphorically, and wherever there is inactivity there is death and decay. Work is the law of growth; without exercise our bodily, our mental,, our spiritual powers would become paralyzed and be,lost. To belong to the ‘Chivalry of Labor,” is to have fellowship with the angels, for they cease not day nor night to do His will before Whom they stand and to fly upon the errands of His mercy and His love. There is no “rest” without work; the joy of accomplishment is unknown to him who will not labor; the idle man falls an easy prey to all the terrors of despair and to all the assaults of the devil. The promised Paradise in which it is to be “always afternoon” and where lazy enjoyment is to fill up the round of existence, would soon prove a veritable hell to one created in. the image of God. PEOPLE sometimes sing:

“’Tis a point I long to know; Oft it causeth anxious thought; Do I love my God or no? Am I His, or am I not?”

Let us put all such idle questionings aside forever: we are His; we have His Word for it: “Thou art mine.” We were “sold under sin,” but He redeemed us (bought us back, that is) ; the devil signed the receipt for the price in the precious blood of the Well-beloved Son; and from that day we have belonged to God. Whether we love Him or no, is another matter; if not we ought to be heartily ashamed of the fact; but there can be no doubt as to His ownership. We are not His one day, and some one else’s the next; God does not give away His possessions in that fashion. Ohr imperfections and shortcomings, nay, even
