WHAT DRIFTERS Offers You

OUR HERITAGE Established in 1983, Drifters has gone from strength to strength to become the leaders in adventure travel throughout southern and East Africa. Our packages are renowned for including far more than others on offer, and our vast infrastructure of Drifters owned vehicles, boats, canoes, adventure equipment and other resources mean that clients are able to enjoy the best of Africa without added expense. OUR PRODUCT All of our tours are inclined toward the interesting and often unique fauna and flora of Africa and for this reason we often leave the beaten track to explore remote areas where little or no familiar infrastructure exists. In these areas we generally camp, but all equipment is supplied, and no previous experience is necessary. All that you need to bring along is a sense of adventure and the clothes you will wear. (For the camping tours you also need to bring your sleeping bag!) When we enter built-up areas where facilities exist, we use lodges, tented units or small hotels. Drifters tours are based on twin shared accommodation; however we do not charge a single supplement for individual bookings. OUR CLIENTS We target adventure-minded people, who through their own active participation in the tours get maximum enjoyment. Our clients are normally down-to-earth people from all walks of life and from all corners of the globe, who by choice have selected an adventure safari in order to enjoy the maximum experience. If you really wish to spend your time on an African safari with a small international group, and you relish the thought of an environmentally educative and adventurous experience where ‘Roughing in and Loving it’ is the order of the day, then Drifters is your only choice. ITINERARIES The day by day descriptions published in this brochure or on the website are intended as a guideline only. Adventure travel by nature is unpredictable and weather patterns, game migrations, road conditions, travelling times and a multitude of other factors associated with travel in Africa may necessitate itinerary changes that ultimately are for the client’s benefit. An open and flexible approach, a willingness to participate in the day to day of the tour procedures and an awareness of the elements are essential in order to get the most out of your tour experience.

The Original GREEN COMPANY Drifters has a proud history of conservation that spans over 4 decades. Our approach to running tours in a safe and sustainable manner is green to the core with numerous projects launched over the years that not only benefit the environment and local communities but also our guests on tour giving them a unique and sustainable experience. Since inception we have invested in the environment and local communities rebuilding nature areas that were once on the verge of destruction and thus ensuring that the local communities benifit from the proceeds of tourism. Our involvement with nature areas like the Drakensberg, Namibia, our Maun Lodge in Botswana and the Lodges in Balule adjacent to Kruger Park are shining examples of years of rehabilitation and investment to turn these properties into thriving nature areas filled with indigenous plant and animal species. Our efforts do not stop at rehabilitating nature areas but expand to the local communities that live in the areas we visit and work. By employing only local guides from Southern Africa for our scheduled groups tours is just the beginning. Throughout our tour routes we employ local people that live in the vicinity ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. All of our Drifters staff have the opportunity to improve and advance their skill level through a study support program in place for them. Caring for the environment to ensure that future generations are able to travel with us and have the same experience we offer now is part of the essence of Drifters and remains a focus point for everyone on the team. Visiting sensitive nature areas is part of our experience and our guides ensure that we offer a fantastic experience but one that is controlled and has no damaging effect on the environment. Avoiding single use plastic wherever possible and the active promotion of safe and sustainable water use are two key aspects. Travelling through developing counties where limited facilities exist for good waste management our guides make a point of leaving no negative footprint in each campsite. One of the oldest adventure tour companies in South Africa our approach to a sustainable future and the implementation of sustainable practices has been the focus since 1983. It remains one of the core values for the company and its employees driven to a greener future for all. Our affiliation to numerous governing bodies in Southern Africa that control and regulate the tourism industry is a stamp of approval for the practices implemented.

The casual visitor to Botswana could be excused for seeing the country as kilometre upon kilometre of flat, desolate scrubland with little or no surface water. But on closer inspection, coupled with local knowledge, a whole new world will manifest itself, and what is arguably Africa’s finest wildlife destination will be revealed. Botswana is a country the size of France, with over a quarter of its land set aside exclusively for nature conservation. Our tour will take us through the vast Kalahari plains. We then venture further north, into the magnificent Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland river delta, which spills water from the faraway mountains of Angola into the vast plain of the Makgadikgadi, creating a unique wildlife paradise. We explore the world renowned game areas in fully equipped, open 4x4 vehicles, our route following the age old game migration tracks, depending on the season. We enjoy a game viewing boat cruise on the Chobe River, in Chobe National Park, and finally we visit “The Smoke that Thunders” - Victoria Falls. Clients may opt to fly out from Victoria Falls or to complete the journey back to Johannesburg, travelling southwards overland. This tour offers the adventure traveller, the photographer, the birdwatcher and the naturalist the ultimate natural paradise. This epic tour visits a host of highlights in no fewer than four southern African countries. Africa is huge, and we will have to drive quite a long way, often on rough roads, but our specially designed safari vehicle is up to the task. Each day will bring something new and exciting. Starting in Cape Town, we will visit the Cape of Good Hope and hike Table Mountain. We will canoe on the Orange River, a life-giving miracle in the arid dryness of the Richtersveld. In Namibia we will walk on the some of the world’s highest sand dunes, fall in love with quaint Swakopmund, and explore the wild places of Etosha National Park. Botswana invites us to glide through reed channels in the Okavango Delta, an emerald gem in the vast dry expanse of the Kalahari Desert, and game view by boat in Chobe National Park. In Zimbabwe we will be captivated by the raw power of Victoria Falls while we have the chance to test our nerves in Africa’s adventure playground. An open vehicle game drive in Hwange National Park gives us yet another chance to get close to Africa’s wildlife, and tracking rhinos on foot in Matobo will thrill and humble us all at the same time. Returning to Botswana we have a last chance to sit around a fire, taking in the night sounds and heady scents of the bush, before heading to Africa’s richest city, the cultural melting pot of Johannesburg. Namibia: Africa’s adventure playground. The land of unrelenting sun, where the ground appears to beg the heavens for rain and the vast landscapes stretch uninterrupted for hundreds of kilometres, without signs of human intervention. Living deserts, where one gazes in wonder and amazement at the displays of changing natural colours, and at the animals and plants that somehow survive in this seemingly harsh environment. This tour covers all of the popular highlights, but also includes many “off the beaten track” destinations, seldom visited by mainstream tourism. Flexibility, a willingness to participate, an awareness of the elements, and a desire for unlimited adventure, are essential in order to best absorb all this tour has to offer. Clients may opt to fly out from Victoria Falls or Maun or to complete the journey back to Johannesburg, travelling southwards overland. This tour offers the adventure traveller, the photographer, the birdwatcher and the naturalist the ultimate natural paradise.
