Making Your Legal Experience Even Easier in 2020

I t’s hard to believe it’s already February. It seems like we were just talking about moving into a new office — and that was last summer! Going into the new year, we’ve been very busy. Between handling new cases and meeting with clients, we’ve been doing a lot of work on a number of other projects, too. For example, we’ve been in the process of updating our website. If it’s not up yet, it will be up very soon. As I’ve mentioned in the past, we’re dedicated to making resources available to our clients and anyone who has questions about various legal topics, including personal injury, criminal defense, and DUI defense. While we already have many resources on our website — which you can find at MatthewKoneckyPA.com — we want to make it even easier to find the information you’re looking for. If you haven’t spent much time on our website, it has several different sections. You can find topics related to several law issues, and you’ll also find our blog and videos as well. There are links to the books I’ve written — and they’re all free to download. You can expect to see even more resources in 2020. As I mentioned, we moved office spaces in July 2019. We moved into a bigger space in the same building and it’s been exciting to see the space come together. It’s allowed us to really stretch our legs. But as we make changes to where we work and meet with clients, we’ve also been making changes to our staff. That is to say, we’ve been adding new team members! Some of our clients may already be familiar with Roz. She has been assisting with client matters now for several months. Going into the New Year, we’ve been on the lookout for another new team member — and by the time this newsletter goes to print, there’s a good chance we will have found them. We’ve been looking for another person to take on client support and even some of our new marketing initiatives.

All this growth is a good sign that more people have been coming to us for legal help. We’ve been very successful in assisting our clients, which has turned into a lot of positive feedback and ultimately into more clients! Our clients are telling others about us and we really appreciate that. We’re incredibly thankful for the many reviews everyone has been posting to Google and Avvo. If you’re a client and you haven’t yet shared your thoughts on Google Reviews or Avvo, it only takes a few minutes — and I would appreciate it! Since day one, I’ve strived to create a client- friendly firm and these are really great at communicating that I’ve done just that. I’m grateful for every review and all the feedback I get from clients.

10.0

I wish you the best in 2020 and, as always, we’re here to assist with your legal issues — we’re just a phone call away!

THE DOG WHO HELPED TAKE DOWN AL-BAGHDADI Meet Conan

On Oct. 28 last year, President Donald Trump tweeted a photo that quickly went viral. It showed an adorable snapshot of a bright-eyed Belgian Malinois, tongue lolling, still wearing its camo military vest. In the caption, President Trump explained that the pup, Conan, was a national hero who was instrumental in taking down ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. With four years in special operations forces and roughly 50 missions under his collar, Conan was selected to be part of the team that pursued al-Baghdadi through a network of underground tunnels in northwest

Syria, where the terrorist ultimately died. It’s unclear whether Conan was there to track al-Baghdadi or to spot improvised explosive devices that may have been planted on the route, but either way, he performed well. According to NBC News, Conan was injured by some live electrical cables during the mission, but he recovered quickly and was back on duty within the week. Meanwhile, President Trump invited the brave pup to the White House and tweeted out a doctored photo that showed him awarding Conan a Medal of Honor. President Trump captioned the photo “AMERICAN HERO!” and he’s not alone in his appreciation for the hardworking dogs that have been helping our military since World War II. “To me, they’re the first line of defense,” United States War Dogs Association President Ron Aiello told Vox after the news about Conan came out. “They’re such a great asset to our military today.”

“There aren’t enough words in the dictionary to describe how appreciative I am of Mr. Konecky! I thought for sure that I would be stuck on probation for at least two years, and then came my personal hero! He was not only able to have my probation modified so that I would be able to travel tri-county, but now, because of him, I will

also officially be off of probation in July. I am so happy that I found him; my only regret is that I didn’t find him sooner! If I could give more than five stars, I would! He was very professional, explained everything to me, didn’t make any promises, and was very straight forward. When he enters the courtroom, he has a disposition about him that says, ‘I’m here to take care of business,’ and that’s exactly what he did.

Look no further! Mr. Konecky is your guy. I HIGHLY recommend him! Thanks again for everything! –Amanda L

Florida roads aren’t always dangerous, but there are a handful of drivers who have a habit of disregarding the rules of the road and common courtesy. The I-95 corridor between West Palm Beach and Miami can be, in a word, trying. Of course, there are bad drivers all over the country — drivers who exhibit habits that can result in injury or death. Here are three examples of those habits (and you probably saw at least one on your commute today). Coasting in the Left Lane Most drivers know the left lane works best when it’s used as a passing lane, but some drivers love to make this their personal lane. To make matters worse, they aren’t driving any faster than the rest of traffic, making it impossible for other drivers to pass and continue forward. 3 Driving Habits That Send Us Spinning Many drivers try to combat this by flashing their brights or honking, but that doesn’t always work. The point is, when drivers clog up the left lane, it slows the overall flow of traffic. Tailgating This is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tailgating is the cause of about 23% of all rear-end collisions. The danger increases significantly if the driver is tailgating while intoxicated. Driving under the influence dulls reaction time. While driving under the influence puts everyone on the road in danger, tailgating puts the driver in front in extreme danger.

Closing the Gap When you’re trying to merge or making a turn, you probably turn on your indicator. However, there are a select group of drivers who see turn signals as a threat. They see you want in, so they speed up to close the gap, making it dangerous to merge. And there’s nothing we can do about it. To make matters worse, you now have to slow down to merge. When you slow down, it means the person behind you has to slow, causing a ripple effect in traffic. This is how traffic jams are created — all because someone didn’t want to lose their precious spot in traffic.

3 Review Sites to Check Before Turning on the TV

3 Review Sites to Help You Monitor What Your Kids Are Watching With all the content available in the world of family entertainment, it’s hard to determine what’s appropriate for children, and it depends heavily on age. In this blurry landscape, it may seem as though no one has the right answers. Luckily, there are online resources available to parents who want to get educated about what is okay for their children to see. Dove.Org judge content for kids who are in between rating groups. The reviewers claim, “Unlike the MPAA, we do not assign a single, age-specific rating, and we do not make recommendations. Instead we assign each film three distinct, category- specific ratings: one for sex and nudity, one for violence and gore, and one for language. Each rating is on a scale of 0-10, depending on quantity and context.” CommonSenseMedia.org

This website’s sole focus is to define the appropriate age for individuals to consume certain media. Their reviews do more than just declare a show or movie to be appropriate for all ages. They actually place films, TV programs, and books into three different categories based on their intended audiences. All the entertainment they review earn one of the following three ratings: Dove Approved All Ages, Dove Approved 12+, and Dove Approved 18+. Kids-In-Mind.com

CommonSenseMedia.org has you covered on all bases relating to content your kids want to consume. They review all the movies and TV shows available, but they also review books, apps, and games. They also provide age and genre filters so you can easily determine if the next Xbox game your child wants is appropriate. In addition, CommonSenseMedia.org understands that social media sites and interactive games like Fortnite are also areas for concern for most parents. To address these concerns, the website offers guides that walk you through child-appropriate use of leading social media and entertainment platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat. These guides define what each platform is, how it works, and what you can do to make sure your kids stay safe while using them.

Kids-In-Mind.com reviews all the latest blockbuster movies and breaks down exactly why they have G, PG-13, and R ratings. This website is a great tool to

Deciding what is or isn’t appropriate for your kids isn’t easy, so be sure to use these resources to monitor the entertainment your kids are consuming.
