Render Unto Caesar Ev ery Christian is v ita lly in ter ested in the amount of taxes our government demands each year. Senator H a rry F . By rd (D em .-V a .), chairm an of the Senate F inan ce Committee, in an article w ritten for H um an Even ts, W ashington, D .C ., gives some very interesting in form ation on government spend ing and taxes. “ In 25 years the federal debt has risen from $ 2 2 b il lion to more than $275 billion. It is taking more than 10 per cen t of our total tax income to pay the in terest. In the first 150 years— up to 1932— we were p ractically on a pay-as-you-go-basis. W e had our wars and buckled down and paid off the cost. “W e have increased the federal civilian payroll from 575 ,000 to 2% m illion employees and increased th e ir pay from less than $1 billion 25 years ago to more than $10 b il lion yearly. “In 1956 the gross tax collection — federal, state and local — was $99 .8 billion out of a national in come of $ 3 3 4 billion. Th is means that 2 9 cents out of every dollar earned goes for taxes, one kind or another.” Senator Byrd agrees w ith the Hoover report th a t m any b il lions can be saved by simply insti tuting the recommendations of the Hoover Commission. M r. Hoover estimates 5 Yz billion dollars could be saved annually. No one can offer any reasons for not adopting the Hoover recommendations, ex cept th a t politicians do not find it expedient to do so. T h e Christian is admonished to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s, but perhaps the tim e has come when we are required to ren der to our government more than th a t wh ich is righ tfu lly Caesar’s. "Lord Jesus" Named as Candidate “Lord Jesus, S a v i o u r o f t h e W o rld ” was proposed as a candidate for the N ew D e l h i L o k S a b h a (low er house of P a rliam en t) seat in

a set of nom ination papers filed re cen tly at the election office in New D elh i, according to the T im es of India. T h e proposer, “a dark, short m an in a black coat and trousers” who gave his nam e as “Lord Jesu s,” turned up at the election office to ascertain whether th e nom ination papers sent by post had been re ceived in time. H e told the election officials th a t he was employed in the “P ray ing Department of m y Lord Jesu s.” World Government D r. Arnold Toynbee, the noted B ritish historian, has said that “a world government w ill probably come about, but th a t the tim e ele m en t involved is en tire ly unpred ict ab le.” D r. Toynbee, speaking under the auspices of the Pakistan Institu te of In ternational A ffairs in Karach i, said that “religion can serve as a redeem ing featu re in this atomic age when regimentation is on the increase.” H e said, “H um an ity is more afraid of war today than it was a t any tim e in history. T h e reason is that the times have per fected atom ic weapons of destruc tion .” D r. Toynbee thinks th a t in case of a third world w ar human life on this planet m igh t be to tally destroyed. He said, “ In an atomic w ar both sides would be ann ih ilat ed. D efeat or victory have lost th eir meaning. T h e age of the atom has made nonsense of the institution of w ar.” Ancient Mirrors T h irte en ancien t bronze Chinese m irrors, estimated to be 1,800 to 1,900 years old, have been discov ered in a tomb in Okayama City, Japan . T h e tomb is believed to have been bu ilt in the ea rly days of J a pan. T h e m irrors, bearing carved images of various deities and an i mals, were found, together w ith 10 other items including swords, arrowheads and iron spears, in the hillside tomb by three Okayama in habitants. END.
