S IN G IN G JACK continued

ALL OVER THE WORLD PEOPLE ARE HUNGRY

looked as worried as I had ever seen a man. I guess I ’d gotten kind of attached to Hiram because he was always giving me candy and gum or buying me a coke. He did that with all the kids, I guess, but he always seemed to single me out as someone special. That was partly why I felt so sorry for him, looking so miserable that way. Going forward and telling Christ I was giving up all my sins and weakness had made me feel better. It had made me want to go out and help Hiram, like the preacher had said in his sermon. I had told Aunt Downy Smith I was going off down the hollow but would he home in time to milk the cow. I thought of that as I sat there in the cabin watching Hiram hugging his gun, and I guessed that Aunt Downy thought I was an awful liar. You could hear the singing now even with the wind coming up again and Hiram moved a little, directing his gun straight toward the door. I knew then that some thing terrible was going to happen. I was so scared I just sat there like I couldn’t move. And then I thought of praying. And right away I felt right down ashamed because I ’d gone and promised God there at the church I would cast all my weaknesses upon Him. How could I expect God to help when I wasn’t even doing my part? “Uncle Hiram,” I said, “I don’t know who’s coming down that path singing that way, but whoever he is, God is here too. You’ve got to trust Him, Uncle Hiram. Please don’t do anything that you’ll hate terribly. If you shoot, you might — might be a m u r d e r e r , Uncle Hiram!” That word seemed to rouse him. He looked straight at me and there was something else on his face be sides the fear. It was like two powerful things fighting — like a dog and a coon rip into each other sometimes. “Little fella, that singing you hear is coming from Jack the Sing er. They used to call him that in the old days because when he got mad and started out to get somebody he’d sing. It wasn’t a hymn then,
