ink. Begin the lesson with the black concealed in one hand.) LESSON: I hold in my hand a piece of beautiful silk 12 inches square. It has 144 square inches in it. This beautiful piece of silk reminds me of King Solomon. It was said, “And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. . . . And God gave Solomon wisdom and under standing exceeding much, and large ness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Kings 4:25, 29, 30). There are many wonderful things

them from sin which mars their testimony.

OBJECT: A piece of white paper 8^/2 x 11 inches. (Fold each end to within 1/4 inch of the middle, leaving a gap of Y 2 inch. In this space print the word, “Solomon.” Open the folds and using the letters in the Word “Solo mon” complete the words “Wisdom, Gold, Pleasure, Women, Men, Only, Vanity.” ) LESSON: The name on this piece of paper was one of the greatest kings of Israel. In thinking of him, there are many things we recall. Perhaps the most outstanding thing for which he is remembered is his wisdom. We w ill open the paper and see what we find. Yes, wisdom is the first thing which fits into his name. You w ill remem ber that God gave him the choice of riches or wisdom, and he chose wis dom. Because he made this choice, he not only received wisdom but God gave him riches as well. The next word which fits into his name is the word “Gold.” No king __ s WISDOM 0 GOLD L PLEASURE 0 WOMEN Mo MEN N ONLY VANITY who ever lived in Jerusalem was rich er than he. Next we notice the word “Pleasure.” Solomon had given himself over to enjoy pleasure. We read, “I said in mine heart, Go to now, I w ill prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleas ure . . . ” (Eccl. 2 :1 ). “Women” is the next word fitting into his name. Not only did he have many wives but he had women serv ants as well. We now see the word “Men” in his name. He had a great army and many men servants. If it had been possible for a person to get real joy out of worldly things, Solomon would have done so, but we find that he said, “. . . behold, this also is vanity” (Eccl. 2 :1 ). The last two words which fit into his name are “Only Vanity.” This record of Solomon’s experiments in trying to find satisfaction in the things of the world is left for us in order that we might not make the same mistakes which he did. We should rather seek satisfaction in the salvation which is in Christ and in spiritual things.

about the kingdom of Solomon. In many ways it was the most wonderful reign of any of Israel’s kings. As I unfold this piece of silk, what is the most noticeable thing about it? “The black square in the middle,” I hear someone say. Correct. And just as this cloth is spoiled by this dark spot, the life of Solomon too was in a large manner spoiled by his later sin. In 1 Kings 11:9, 11 we read, “And the L o r d was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the L o r d God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice. . . . Wherefore the L o r d said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and w ill give it to thy servant.” The only thing about the silk that is noticeable is the black square. It is too bad because there are 143 square inches clean and white, and only one is blackened, representing sin. Boys and girls, it is this way in life — a Christian may do many wonder ful services for the Lord and then later get his life stained with some sin. When this happens, the good things are forgotten by the people who know him and only the sin is remembered. His whole influence counts for nothing in the sight of men. Christians should always rely upon God’s power to save and keep
