WHENWEDDING BELLS RING

‘I’LL NEVER MARRY A DENTIST’

communication, and being together all day put a strain on their relationship. I decided I would not marry a dentist myself to avoid those issues. But life had other plans in store for me when I met the sweetest guy in dental school. Roger helped me a lot, and it was fortunate we met there. We were both busy with school work, but we got to know each other well because we would see one another during class. Roger works hard, but he can also be so silly! He’s always been able to make me laugh, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with him. I’m happy to marry a dentist, as long as that dentist is him.

Two dentists walk into a bridal show ... Next month, we’ll have an office first when my husband, Dr. Roger Tran, and I attend the San Diego Wedding Party Expo. This marks the first trade show we’ve attended as exhibitors. Two dentists might seem a little out of place among the florists and bakers, but wedding season in San Diego can be a busy time for dentists, too. Recently, a bride, a mother-of-the-bride, and a bridesmaid, all from different wedding parties, came into the office for cosmetic treatment. Weddings are beautiful affairs with countless reasons smile; veneers, crowns, and whitening treatments can create a dramatic difference on your big day. As cosmetic dentistry becomes more readily accessible, wedding-goers can add “improve smile” to their pre-wedding to- do list, alongside “tux fitting” and “getting hair done.” Attending the bridal show made me remember the stressful experience of planning my own wedding. There’s a lot to consider when you plan even a simple ceremony, but Roger and I were married at a church in front of 220 people! Big weddings are a staple of our culture, and, as is tradition, our parents invited their friends to come celebrate with us. I remember how I stood at the altar with my soon-to-be husband and felt the significance of that moment. All of our friends and family were there to share the moment with us, and I knew I would never forget it. It’s almost funny, because I didn’t want to marry another dentist at all! Years ago, I worked at an office run by a husband and wife dentist team. It was not the worst job of my life, but the office was always hectic, and the couple seemed overwhelmed at times. There were challenges with to smile, and the last thing anyone wants is to feel self-conscious about their smile when surrounded by cameras. We offer more than just braces to improve your

“I’m happy to marry a dentist, as long as that dentist is him.”

After graduating, we took it a step further and started a practice together, and fortunately it was nothing like when I worked for the other dentist couple. Everything I thought would be a con about marrying a dentist — the busy work schedule, being together all the time, challenges with communication — turned out to be a pro. We work so well together, and when we do have difficulties communicating, the fact that we’re both dentists helps us work through it. We understand each other so well.

My wedding was a truly special day, and it was just chapter one of this amazing stage of my life. I’m thrilled to help every bride and groom start their marriage with that same happiness and celebrate with a new smile.

August’s Best Deals Back to School = Big Savings

Laptops Finding the perfect laptop for yourself or your kids might take a little research, but it’s research that will pay off in the form of big savings. You’ll find discounts at most retailers that offer laptops, including the manufacturers themselves. Apple, HP, Dell, and others typically offer incentives on top of discounts (such as gift cards), so it’s in your best interest to look around to find the deal that works for you. Storage Containers With millions of college students getting ready to head off to school, many retailers are taking advantage of the fact that these kids need a place to store all of their stuff. You, too, can take advantage of these sales to stock up on storage bins and boxes for just about any purpose, from food to clothing storage. In addition to storage containers, you’ll find many home organization products on sale, as well. Vehicles According to USAA, August is a great time to start shopping for a new vehicle. New-year model cars and trucks are trickling onto lots around the country, and dealerships are slightly more motivated to get rid of last year’s stock. Use this time to do research and browse dealer selection. For even more potential savings, USAA suggests visiting the dealership on a Monday or Tuesday and later in the day.

August is back-to-school season, and that means you’ll find plenty of items on sale — everything students and families need to start the new school year right. Retailers, both online and off, are vying for your dollar this month, and they know just how much families love to save. Here’s a sample of the items you’ll find on sale in August.

Anywhere in the World WHAT BROUGHT OFFICE MANAGER GOLI GODARZI BACK TO A+?

Our office manager, Goli Godarzi, has become a familiar face since she joined the team in 2015. However, her legacy with A+ Family Dentistry stretches back much further. For six years, Goli worked with Dr. Roger Tran as the office manager for our sister location. In 2012, Goli’s husband took a new position and their family relocated to the Bay Area. When they returned in 2015, we were more than happy to see Goli rejoin the A+ team. So, what brought her back? “Part of it is being able to help the patients, and part of it is being able to support the rest of the staff,” Goli explains. “I’ve worked in offices where you just clock in, sit down, and have no real goals or responsibilities. With A+, I have always felt like I play a role in guiding the rest of the staff when they’re in difficult situations. I also get to educate patients and help them reach a better place where they not embarrassed about their teeth, or in pain, and they like their smile. It’s difficult to describe, but I truly love being here.” This is extremely high praise from a woman who has spent her life traveling the world. Born in Iran, Goli grew up in Sweden and lived in Dubai and the U.K. for a time before moving to the United States in 2001. She’s

been able to meet and bond with different people from cultures across the globe, which makes her skilled at connecting with our patients, who come from all walks of life.

“I don’t know what comes next, but I know I love where I am right now!” Goli says, which is great to hear. Right now Goli’s family is experiencing major life milestones. Her daughter just graduated from high school, and her son, who graduated from law school last year, got married at the end of July. Congratulations to the whole Godarzi family, and thank you, Goli, for spending all these years with us!

Psychology of a Smile 5 Ways a Smile Can Boost Your Health and Happiness

“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.” – Mother Teresa Believe it or not, a smile is far more than just a facial expression. It’s a valuable tool we can use to strengthen many areas of our lives. Here are just a few perks of grinning ear to ear. Improve Your Mood We often smile because we’re happy, but there’s evidence that we can also feel happy because we’re smiling. Research from universities in Wales, Germany, and the Netherlands found that individuals who were instructed to smile in certain studies reported higher levels of positivity than those forced to frown. Scientists suggest this is a neural feedback loop. When we start to smile,

our brain reacts as if we are already happy about something and triggers the necessary biological responses. Boost Your Immune System The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reports smiling can add seven years to your life. This is likely due to the positive impact smiling has on our physical health. A study published in the journal Psychological Science found people who smile experience a lower heart rate and quicker stress recovery. Additionally, biochemist Sondra Barrett found smiling can “release tension on a cellular level,” enabling our cells to more easily combat stress-induced cell mutations. Share Some Positivity Smiling is infectious! Neuroscientist Marco Lacoboni researched mirror neurons, which are

cells in the brain that respond both when we want to perform an action and when we see someone else perform a certain action. As mentioned above, just the act of smiling makes us feel happier. When our smile encourages someone else to smile, we’re really spreading some happiness to others. Smiles are truly powerful. If you’ve ever felt embarrassed or insecure about your smile, it’s time to act! A+ Family Dentistry is offering smile makeover consultations. Talk to your dentist about what you don’t like about your smile and learn how easy it is to fix. Call 619‑831‑8832 (San Diego) or 858‑842‑5850 (Poway) now! The first five patients to call will receive their consultation for free. Don’t miss out!

View of a Lifetime WHERE TO WATCH THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE

Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska In the heartlands, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide-open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot. The Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists. Visit the official website of The Great American Eclipse at greatamericaneclipse.com for everything you need to know about this once-in-a-lifetime sight!

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called The Great American Eclipse.

If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence.

Columbia, South Carolina Need a place to watch the eclipse in the Southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over.
