E ducation is at the heart of Chesapeake Region Safety Council (CRSC). As a nonprofit organization, CRSC’s goal is to educate organizations on best safety practices for preventing accidental injuries and death. “We educate, we mentor, we partner. That’s what we do … We’re not a government agency, we’re not regulators,” explained Dave Madaras, CSP, CHST, President of Chesapeake Region Safety Council. In addition to safety education, the organization also offers consultation and advocacy services.
CRSC is more than 100 years old and was founded in 1923 as a sub group of The Merchants and Manufacturers of Baltimore. Its genesis revolved around the safety movement on the rise at that time in history. The organization went through a couple of name changes before eventually becoming Chesapeake Region Safety Council in 2004. By then, the organization had expanded its reach from exclusively Baltimore to serving the entire Chesapeake region. CRSC has been granted authority by the Department of Labor to conduct special training programs in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. By 2023, Madaras said they had outgrown the space they’d moved to six years prior, so they approached St. John Properties about an open suite next to their facility. They negotiated a new seven-year lease a year early so they could complete construction on the open suite before their 100-year anniversary in 2023. From
there, Chesapeake worked with St. John Properties’ space planning and in-house interior construction teams to add a third classroom, additional office space, and expand their lab. They were also able to add a much-needed storage area. Madaras gives kudos to interior designer Terri Blecman from St. John Properties for how helpful and flexible she was to work with. Chesapeake wasn’t completely sure on their vision for the new building, but Blecman created multiple drawings until they could find the best solution for making the space work. CRSC utilizes three large classrooms to hold all their training courses. Lab space in the back allows for hands-on training, such as best safety practices for working in a confined space. Described by Madaras as a “garage area,” the lab includes fall protection equipment and ladders. Madaras himself is a certified- safety professional, who’s been in the industry for more than 35 years. CRSC
