n ’ s It’s Your Turn With the Kids Back in School, Consider Orthodontic Treatment for Yourself

It may still be hot out, but summer is over. It was a long and exciting one, with vacations and breaks, fireworks and holidays, and maybe even some time at the beach. But now we’re back to school, and that means the routine starts again: homework, dance, soccer, baseball, and more. The kids will be busy, but what about you? Chances are, you can get back into your routine as well. If you’ve been putting off your own dental care in order to get the kids taken care of — a common practice amongst parents — you should come in during the first week of school for your own checkup. We treat many adults who want a great, healthy smile, and there are a lot of treatment options these days that are attractive to someone who isn’t interested in traditional metal braces.

Maybe you’ve had a little orthodontic care in the past, but your teeth have since shifted. Perhaps your orthodontist back in the day didn’t tell you that you need to wear your retainer regularly. Or maybe you had great teeth in your younger days but have noticed some shifting lately. That happens more often than you might think, especially with the bottom front four teeth. Those teeth are the most prone to rotating, crowding, and other issues that can happen well into adulthood and in a relatively short period of time. Not only can this be aesthetically displeasing, but it also leads to dental disease and eventually bone loss. Just as you only get the one set of teeth, you also only get so much dental bone. Once it’s gone, there’s really no getting it back. And if you can’t properly clean your teeth and gums due to dental

crowding, you’re at real risk for that bone loss as time goes on. Adult options for orthodontic treatment include the ever-popular Invisalign, which works quickly and is very effective, as well as visually subtle. Invisalign won't limit the foods you can eat. Traditional braces are also an option, and we can mount them to the back of your teeth for cosmetic appeal. We want to take care of your winning smile, and we have a lot of ways to do it. Go ahead! Schedule an appointment with us for the first week of school. It’s time to spend some time taking care of yourself, and I guarantee we can give you a smile that’s healthy and beautiful. – Dr. Howard Shullman www.ShullmanOrtho.com • 561.868.5050 • 1

3 Studying Hacks for Successful Students Make the Grade!

Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine, and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year. Chew On This Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they have a biology test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the

minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before. Proofread With Google Is your child trying to perfect an essay before a midnight deadline? Be sure they leave time to read their essay aloud! Tom Stafford, a psychologist who studies typos at the University of Sheffield, notes that when we reread our work, “we don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA databases.” Your student doesn’t catch their typos because they don’t expect them! By reading their work aloud, your student can fix those typos as they come up. But why put in all the effort when they can let Google do it for them? They can simply copy and paste the essay into Google Translate and let it read the essay aloud. Hearing

their work ring out in Google’s monotone speech will help them highlight and fix those mistakes. Get Off Facebook Is your child wasting all of their precious studying hours on social media? According to Common Sense Media’s 2015 national census survey, tweens and teens spend an average of six to nine hours on some form of media daily. Help your student learn to self-regulate with StayFocusd, a web extension available for free in the Chrome Web Store. By adding this extension to your web browser, you can limit the amount of time your child spends scrolling through Facebook and maximize the time they spend on Google Scholar and Quizlet.

Floss Like a Boss With Braces:

Tools to Try said, any tool that will take the discomfort or hassle out of flossing with braces is welcomed by orthodontists. There’s no getting around

back behind the wire of your braces by pulling it through in a small loop, similar to a soft plastic threading needle. Many people with braces have also found a water irrigation tool, or oral irrigator, to be beneficial, especially those with particularly sensitive gums. An irrigation tool is essentially a device that distributes a pulsation of water to your gums to stimulate the blood flow and remove bacteria from between your teeth. There are many ways to incorporate new tools into your dental regimen, and everyone has different preferences. That

Flossing, which isn’t as easy with braces, is simple with some practice and the right tools. Flossing once per day is still necessary — even more so with braces — to protect your gums from gingivitis. For best results at your next orthodontic checkup, keep the essential tools on hand each time you clean your teeth at home. Small, bristly Proxabrushes can remove a lot of bacteria from between teeth and around wires and brackets, but it’s still important to floss, as it can reach smaller spaces. Having trouble getting the floss around your new braces? Floss threaders help get the floss

it. Flossing every day is one of the most important habits to help your teeth stay clean and healthy for the big reveal: the removal of your braces.

Where to Watch the Great American Eclipse

The Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists. Visit the official website of the Great American Eclipse at greatamericaneclipse.com for everything you need to know about this once-in-a-lifetime sight!

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence. Columbia, South Carolina Need a place to watch the eclipse in the southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South

Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over. Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska In the heartlands, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide- open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot.
