Almost a decade ago, back in 2015, Matt and Jake bought a 43% share in a new home in Heaton Moor, Stockport. They were keen to stay living in the area, close to family, but, as rst time buyers, buying a home outright just wasn’t possible Luckily, they discovered shared ownership, a scheme suggested to them by a family member. “Thanks to shared ownership we were able to put down a deposit of £10,000 and buy our own home. When we rst bought our home, a 43% share was the most that we could afford, when you buy your rst home, you’re pretty skint!” As it turns out, shared ownership didn’t only allow Matt and Jake to take their rst step on to the property ladder – they were later able to staircase when they found themselves in a position to be able to afford the outstanding 57%, meaning they would own their home outright. Matt admits that this is not something they had initially given much thought to. “When we rst bought our home, we hadn’t even considered staircasing,” he explains. “We knew it existed but didn’t think about it again until about ve or six years later when we realised we could afford to do so. Once we realised we could afford to buy our home outright we thought we'd just go for it!” Staircasing was a wise move ahead of selling their home. “Because the house was increasing in value, we knew that, if we were to sell it, we’d be able to make more money on it if we owned a higher share. It meant that we owned 100% of the property, so when we sold it, we proted from the full value of the house.” Matt and Jake have already recommended shared ownership to several people following their experience, which exceeded their expectations. “We initially worried that because we were paying part rent, we’d feel like we had a landlord,” says Matt. “It wasn’t like this at all, we never felt that we were checked up on. It always felt like our home.”
