Where to buy? Q I want to buy my first home in a city, but my budget can’t stretch to the big three (London, Birmingham and Manchester). Where else could I look? Molly Ridgeworth, Brighton A Moving away from home and to the big city was once considered a rite of passage for first time buyers. In recent years, increasing house prices have become one of the biggest blockers for aspiring homeowners. This crisis in affordability is especially true for the “big three” cities – but there are plenty of other locations that offer an equally vibrant culture, strong job market and quality of life without the high costs. Bristol has become popular among those looking to take their first step on to the property ladder. Best known for its iconic landmarks, art scene and regenerated harbourside, Bristol offers a more relaxed pace of life compared to the fast-paced environment often found in other major cities. The smaller city centre is easy to navigate and is pedestrian friendly – and well-connected transport links mean that London Paddington is just 90 minutes by train. Bristol is home to a strong property market that is growing but still offers excellent value for money for buyers on a budget. City & Country has been working hard to create characterful homes at our Factory No. 1 development located on North Street in the district of Bedminster. Located on the site of a former tobacco factory, we’ve transformed the old building into a selection of apartments, alongside a selection of new build apartments set around courtyard gardens. This quirky corner of Bristol is best known for its independent shopping and eating, perfect for exploring vintage shops and markets before enjoying a locally sourced lunch in an independent cafe. Currently available at Factory No. 1 is a selection of new build apartments, with prices starting from £250,000 for a one bedroom apartment with a private raised terrace. City & Country is also offering a 5% deposit contribution on selected homes, on reservations that are made before 31 January 2025. Each property comes complete with a fully fitted kitchen, bathrooms and flooring, plus access to a dedicated concierge service.
