sin have rolled away as they knelt in the humble hall next to the pawnbroker’s shop is the lad who sells gardenias on the street. When he returned the week after he had confessed his Lord, he was asked, “Are you saved?” “Yes,” was his clear testimony. “You told me that Jesus died on the cross for me.” But perhaps one of the chief bless ings for those who participate in the work at Biola Hall is the realization of utter helplessness without the power of God and familiarity with His Word. This realization sends the young workers back to their dormitories and class rooms to pray and learn as never be fore—that the privilege of Bible train ing, provided by sacrificial gifts of God’s people, may be turned to its ut most advantage for the sake of lost souls. German people. And one does not have to be a mind reader to know what the new Roman Caesar is thinking as he now sits at the feast with Adolf Hitler ! Within the pouch of the German Rahu already are Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, and France! Compare that with the contents of the Roman pouch. Unless he, whose dream for twenty years has been ever and only of Rome’s becoming once again “mistress of the world,” “glorious as in the days of Augustus Caesar,” has undergone a change of heart due to deterioration and contractility, depend upon this, Adolph Hitler, even as the Pope, is due for a great betrayal. The Roman is riding to power upon the wings of the German Black Eagle. No one who has listened to the braggadocianism of the Roman dictator for the last twenty years, can believe anything else but that when the Black Eagle that carries him shall have clawed nigh unto death its enemies, the Roman rider will be perfectly willing to drive a dagger into the back of the bird that carried him. The Word will stand: “After the league made with him he shall work deceit fully.” The Jew The third stepping-stone is the Jew, who will certainly play his destined part in exalting the Roman to power, for the Antichrist “shall confirm the covenant with many [of Daniel’s people —the Jews] for one week [seven years]” (Dan. 9:27). What a momentous statement it was when Jesus said to His brethren in the flesh: “But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive [ Continued on Page 397]

sires were choked by the cares of the world, like the man who claimed he knew the way to God but would not walk in it because he thought too much of his business. A different barrier presented itself in speaking to a woman, obviously unsaved, reeking with tobacco smoke, who professed to be a Christian. There is scarcely a burden of the hu man heart that has failed to turn up at the converted liquor store. Some Results Is it all just practice? Are the young folk not discouraged by the obstacles they run against in the way? Does their enthusiasm stand the test of re buffs? They are tried, yes, but their Lord is trying them as gold is tried— to bring out the solid value there—and He is rewarding their labors with souls. Among many others whose burdens of Antiochus Epiphanes is the pattern, according to Daniel the prophet. From Daniel’s prophecy we know that the world’s last Caesar “shall come in peaceably”—as Mussolini, the present Roman head, did come, when he marched on Rome in 1922. And the dictator has kept his grip on the Ro man Catholic citizenry of Italy very largely “by flatteries” (Dan. 11:21). How his blandiloquous tongue has be slavered Italy now for nearly twenty years about her innate greatness and glory, promising that she is soon to be glorious “as in the days of Augustus Caesar”—mistress of the world! Hitler has used the same method with those he would deceive in Germany. Moreover, deceitful is the alliance that the Roman dictator has made with papal Rome. Mussolini, the atheist that was, and (despite a change of heart due to policy) still is, loves not the papacy. There is plenty of evidence to this end. The Fascist chief endures the “woman” upon his back, and has very good rea sons in Roman Catholic Italy for doing so. But the Scriptures do not err. Just as soon as the “ten kings” shall “have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast” (Rev. 17:13), then the enthroned beast “shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall bum her utterly with fire” (Rev. 17:16, R. V.). Depend upon It, the hour is coming in which papal Rome will rue the day she blessed the banners of political Rome. Again, as did Antiochus the Roman, “after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully” (Dan. 11:23). That ought to be interesting reading for Adolf Hitler! The whole world is aware that the Italian people have no affinity for the

certain occasion consisted of “one deaj. man, one blind man, one Negro, one drunken Spaniard, two Italian boys— and one white man,” as the boys de scribed it. Surely there was ample scope to test their resources as soul-winners. A second meeting is held for a new crowd, with a different speaker. Then all take part in personal dealing with any who express further interest or desire to make decisions. Trouble-Makers What are some of the problems uifcse young people face as they seek to put into practice the lessons they have stored away in their hearts during study hours ? Once they had to gain control of a woman astrologer who came noisily to the front, waving her hands and inviting people to come to her to hear about their ancestors. On another occasion, an unfriendly visitor tried to keep peo ple out of the meeting. The problem was solved by sending one student out to argue with him, while -others got would-be listeners into the hall. ■Two seven and eight-year-old girls nearly upset the equilibrium of the group. In a spirit of hilarity, they chased about the platform investigating every object they could lay their hands on. Again, two students must take them in charge for a chat to keep them quiet. Evidently those “chats” were effective, for one girl brought her mother '~‘>ck with her, and one was saved. Meeting Others’ Problems Varied' and baffling needs in the hearts of men have confronted Biola stu dents from week to week in their labora tory gospel hall. The personal evangel ism class might discuss the way to meet an atheist’s argument—but here was the atheist himself, in multiplied num bers, dogmatic, often uneducated, per sistent in his loud declamation of the logic of the streets. A class in evi dences might be thoroughly grounded in proofs of the resurrection of Jesus Christ—but here was a young Jew, tat tooed with ninety-eight tattooes, who said he had just come from Palestine and seen the tomb. He refused to believe the Lord could roll away so big a stone. How should the students convince him? Long and earnest was the conversation held with this doubter. A young disappointed lover felt dif ferent about attempting suicide after Biola boys had prayed with him. A backslidden minister, facing the same temptation, turned up in the hall. His wife and children, so he said, were .be ing fed in the jail. There were seasonal churchgoers to meet, like the Catholic who joined only in Christmas and Easter festivities. There were those whose de-
