What Sharon’s Mother Overheard As the teacher of a class In Child Evangelism stepped from the street car, she was praying to God about the les son she had prepared to give that day. The few minutes before time for class to begin were busy ones, but she greeted each child with a smile, and finally thirty-five boys and girls had gath ered to hear God’s Word. Among those who had come for the first time were ten-year-old Sharon and her mother, who had been invited to visit the class. Following a joyful song service and a time of prayer, the teacher opened her Bible for a lesson from John 4 and 5. The name of the lesson was “Christ Speaks a Living Word.” In chapter 4, the teacher pointed out that Christ spoke to the nobleman and said, “Go thy way; thy son liveth.” “And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.” Upon returning to his home, he found his son well, even as Christ had said, and “himself believed, and his whole house.” In John 5, the Lord Jesus went to Jerusalem, and there 'He healed another, a man at the pool of Bethesda. This man was utterly helpless, but at the word of Christ he took up his bed and walked. "The Lord Jesus Christ speaks to our hearts, too,” the teacher continued, “for if we do not know the Lord Jesus as Saviour, we, too, are helpless in our sins. Jesus Christ said, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.’ * As heads were bowed, an opportunity was given for the boys and girls who wished to receive the Lord Jesus as Saviour to raise their hands. Sharon’s hand was the first to be raised, fol lowed by two others. When class was dismissed, the three girls stayed, and the teacher explained to them more about the way of salvation. Sharon’s mother stayed, too, and she listened in tently. Each of the three girls really wanted to receive the Lord Jesus as her Saviour, and it was not long until three precious souls had received eter nal life and passed from death unto life. Left alone, the teacher again raised her heart in gratitude to God for the privilege of leading little ones to Him. But she was not alone for long, for soon Sharon’s mother returned, saying, “I don’t belong to any church, but I would like to pray the little prayer the chil dren prayed a few minutes ago.” Soon this ’mother, who had left God out of her life, believed His precious words, and she, too, passed from death unto life. Through the tears of repentance, she smiled and said, “I have had time for everything but God—now I have Him.”—Aim E. Berg (Biola ’3%).
