on the bobbin, and sewed with the right side of the cloth down. The “U’s” are made of paper with one side covered with dark gray outing flannel, and the other side covered with white outing flannel. They should be of varying sizes. The capital “I” is 14 Inches high, and 1 inch wide. It is made of paper, one side being covered with' dark gray outing flannel, and the other with white outing flannel. Fold 2% inches from the top, and 5 inches from the bottom. When the top is folded down and the bottom up so that the end pieces of the “I” overlap each other, a white cross is made. The red cross can be made of stiff paper backed with outing flannel. Make it 6% inches high with stem and cross arms 1 inch wide. Make the Bible from black outing flannel 7 by 10 inches, and line with white paper on which various verses are written. Paste a piece of white flannel 17 inches long, 11 inches wide at the bottom and 7 inches at the top, along the bottom edge of the inside of the book. Fold this flannel up inside the black covers. Cover a piece of veneer a yard square with light-colored outing flannel.) LESSON: At the left of the board you will see a “U” and an “I” in a sin ful world. You and I look at the world around us, and as we do not look as black as the rest of the world, we con sider ourselves pretty good. We have made a common mistake of not going to the Bible, God’s Word, and examining ourselves in its light. As I open the Bible, a white light [repre sented by the folded white cloth] comes out of it. When I place myself in the light of God’s perfect Word, I look al most black. [Transfer the capital “I” from the world to the white flannel at tached to the Bible.] See, you look as bad as I when you come to the Word of God. [Move the large “U” to the white flannel.] The Bible tells us that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom- 3:23). It also tells us that Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10). When the red cross is placed inside the “U,” it is changed to white. [Re verse the “U” allowing the white side to show.] If I will receive Jesus Christ, I, too, can be saved. [Fold the top of the “I” down, and the bottom up, until the “I” takes the shape of a cross.] The cross fits my life, too. Now God wants us to go back to the world and to let the light of the Word of God shine out.

ises of God in the Old Testament. He said that God the Father had sent Him to make these promises come true that very >day. He came to bring good news to the poor, to make the broken hearted ones happy,

in the Jewish synagogue of our Lord’s day. The leader stood when he read the Word of God, doubtless out of reverence for the voice of God which spoke to him through the Word, and then he resumed his seat when he began his sermon or exhortation. This deep reverence for the written Word was not something new,- but dates back to the very begin ning of the Jewish synagogue worship. Thus in Nehemiah we read, “And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people . . . and when he opened it, all the people stood up” (8:5). I have often thought that a similar way of opening a service would be more impressive and appropriate than many of the opening forms used in our churches today. 4. “There was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah” (v. 17). It was the custom in the synagogues to have a selected reading each Sabbath from both the Law and the Prophets. See the visit of Paul to the synagogue in Antioch where he was asked to speak “after the reading of the law and the prophets" (Acts 13: 14, 15). And how remarkable that in this particular syna gogue in Nazareth, on this particular Sabbath, in this particular book of the Prophets, they should have come to the particular passage that prophetically announced the beginning of Messiah’s ministry, and which Christ read. This is just one more of those great miracles of Providence by which ordinary events take place at exactly the right time to fit the pattern and chronology of the divine eternal plan. Golden Text Illustration L uke . 19:10 An American bishop related the fol lowing: A youth belonging to a Bible class thought fit to discontinue his at tendance. The class assembled, but his place was empty, and the leader looked for the familiar face in vain. He could not be content to conduct the Bible reading as usual, ignorant as to the con dition and whereabouts of the missing one. “Friends,” said he, “read, sing, and pray; my work is to seek and find a stray sheep,” and he started off on the quest. “The stray sheep is before you,” said the bishop to his hearers. “My teacher found me, and I could not resist his pleading. I could not continue to wan der and stray while I was sought so tenderly.”—Sunday School Times. Back Home in Nazareth L uke 4 MEMORY VERSE: “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:14). APPROACH: The Lord Jesus did wonderful things in the city of Caper naum, and then He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up. It was there that He took part in a service in the synagogue. The synagogue was something like our church, and there the Lord Jesus read to the people the prom

to preach deliverance to the captives, to open blind eyes, and to give to the slaves of Satan the glorious liberty of the children of God. The power to do this was given- the Lord Jesus when the Holy Spirit came down from heaven upon Him at His baptism. . LESSON STORY: The people liked the lovely words of the Lord Jesus, but they wondered how He could do great works when He was a man like them selves. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” No, He was not the son of Jo seph. He was the Son of God. Every one except the Lord Jesus Christ has had an earthly father, but He had only a' heavenly Father. Joseph was His adopted father, whom God told to take care of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus. Now that the Lord Jesus had grown lip, His friends had forgotten these things. They were jealous that He could do wonderful things that they could not. The Lord Jesus Christ was God in human flesh. He said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God.” Do you think His old friends loved Him? They wanted to throw Him over a cliff to kill Him, but He walked right through the crowd, and escaped. Were these friends of the (Lord Jesus His real friends? * Object Lesson T h e W orld a n d t h e W ord OBJECTS: A representation of the world, six capital “ITS,” a capital “I,” a red cross, an imitation Bible, and a large cloth-covered board.
