seems to indicate a type of intellectual belief which falls short of salvation. For examples, see John 8:30-44; where Christ speaks to certain “Jews which believed on him” and calls them children of the devil, and note also Acts 8:13-23. The third class of seed, which “fell among thorns,” seems to imply those who are born of God, because only the regener ate can bear fruit, their failure being that they “bring no fruit to perfection,” a description which would fit many of the saved. Regarding the fourth class of seed, there can he no disagreement. They are not only saved, but they also bear fruit as the saved should bear fruit. Golden Text Illustration L uke 8:18 Ex-Chief Bonner, of the New York Fire Department, once said that he could hear the slightest tap on the bell over his bed, while the baby could cry all night without disturbing him. "My wife,” he added, “never hears the. fire alarm, but she wakes up at the slightest squeak from the baby.” There is a way of so setting our ears to the noises of the world as to shut out all other voices. There Is a possibility of so setting our hearts to the messages of God as that "the1slightest tap on the bell” of con science will awake us. —The Bottles of Heaven. A Stormy Day L uke 8 MEMORY VERSE: “What time I am afraid, I will trust In thee” (Psa. 56:3). APPROACH: Great multitudes were healed by the Lord Jesus, in and around Capernaum. He made the blind to see and the deaf to hear; He raised the dead, forgave sins, and taught the poor. Then He sailed In a boat with His disciples

the result is stated as follows: “That seeing th.ey might not see, and hearing they might not understand” (8:10). The first teaching of the Lord to Israel had been very simple and direct, and it was' only after His message had been re jected by the rulers, and His works were attributed to Satan, that He turned to the parabolic method. See Matthew 12 and 13. Even to. those who are saved, and whose minds are illumined by the Spirit, the most difficult portion of the Word to interpret is found in the para bles. And this Is doubtless the reason that- the parables are so popular with unspiritual men and the modernistic preachers. When taken apart from the clear teaching of Scripture on the great doctrines of the Word, the parables eas ily lend themselves to manipulation in the interest of all sorts of error. Only those who are thoroughly grounded in a knowledge of the fundamental truths of the Bible should ever attempt to teach the parables, and then the task must be approached with a sense of hu mility and dependence on divine wisdom. 2. “ A sower went out to sow his seed” (Lk. 8:5). The American Standard Re vised Version helps us here by supplying the definite article. It Is not just any sower, but “the sower” of whom our Lord speaks. Who Is this “sower” of the parable? Matthew 13:37 makes this very clear: “He that soweth the good seed Is the Son of man”—Jesus Christ. 3. It has sometimes been taught that only the fourth class of seed represents those who are truly saved, but this view is not necessarily true. That the first class, “by the wayside,” are not saved is clear from verse 12 where we are told that the devil steals away the Word “lest they should believe and be saved.” There may be some room for argument about the second class of seed, “on the rock,” but the language of verse 13

to help people who lived on the other Side of the lake, which is sometimes called the Sea of Galilee. LESSON STORY: The Lord Jesus was tired. He was God’s Son who came down from heaven, yet He

had a body like other men. He had had no time for food or rest because He •helped every one of the thousands who came to Him. So, as He sailed with His disciples, He fell asleep in the boat. The disciples were brave, strong fisher men who could swim. They were not easily frightened by anything, but when a terrible wind blew on the lake, they were afraid. They woke the Lord Jesus and spoke to Him as if He did not care if they were shipwrecked. The wind howled and tore the sail to pieces, and the waves' seemed mountain high as they dashed over the rolling, tossing lit tle boat, filling it with water. [ Continued on Pagt 387] y
