references to the fulfillment of the Old Testament Scriptures (cf. Matt. 26:24, 31, 54, 56). No circumstance can great ly surprise or trouble us if we see it in relation to the whole plan of God as revealed in the whole Word of God. NOVEMBER 17, 1940 OUR COUNTRY FOR CHRIST D e u t e r o n o m y 7 :6 ; P s a l m s 33:12; 144:15 The Leader’s Opening Remarks 1. The founders of our nation recog nized the authority of the living God. The last sentence of the Declaration of Independence begins: “And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the -protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge . . When the conflicting opinions in the Constitutional Convention seemed to threaten disaster, Benjamin Franklin reminded the assembly that prayer for God’s protection had been offered by the Continental Congress during the war-for independence. He added: “And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend?- Or do we/imagine that we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid ? We have been assured, Sir, in 'the sacred writ ings, that ‘except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political build ing no better than the builders of Babel: . We shall be divided by our little partial' local interests; our projects will tie .con founded, anjJ we ourselves shall become a reproach -and byword down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate in stance, despair of establishing govern ments by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war, and conquest. “I therefore beg leave to move—that henceforth prayers imploring the assist-, ance o f heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before' we proceed to business.” Though the Lord’s dealing may not be apparent at once, no man and no nation ever has put trust in Jehovah and has found Him impotent or Un faithful. 2. All nations that have left God out of their programs have disappeared or will disappear. Witness the mounds that now con tain . all that is left of the mighty cities of Memphis, Thebes, Nineveh, Babylon.

saved from the ruin of sin, and in the accomplishment of that will, terrible pain, ignominy, and even death were inevitable for the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet He^ did not evade the cross; He accepted it willingly (Matt. 26:39; Ueb. 12:2), because the Father’s will could be accomplished in no other way. Christ came to make' “peace through the blood of his cross” (Col. 1:20). Peter, in his impetuosity, unconsciously attempted to turn Christ aside from His real mission when he-sought to defend Him against His enemies (cf. John 18:10). Had the Saviour allowed Peter, or any other person or group, or even “twelve legions of angels” (Matt. 26:53) to have deterred Him from making “one sacrifice for sins for ever” (Heb. 10:12), He would have forfeited the right to say, “I do always those things that please him,” and He would have1 denied to thè whole human race “re demption through his blood” (Eph. 1:7). Tell stories o f persons whom you know who have known peace through accepting the Father’s will. n . PEACE THROUGH AN UNDER STANDING OF THE POWER OF PRAYER (v. 53). Note that the verse teaches: 1. Prayer is possible at any time— “now. pray.” 2. Answers are assumed—"shall . . . give me.” 3. Supply is abundant — “twelve legions of angels.” Did the Lord Jesus accept the truth expressed in 1 John 5:14, 15? For the continual enjoyment of peace of heart, one must remember that “there is nothing too great for God’s power and nothing too small for His love!” Dan Crawford tersely and beautifully expressed a great principle: “The God of the infinite is the God of the infin itesimal.” For inspiration and faith- building, be sure to read the thrilling illustrations in such books as How I Know* God Answers Prayer (by Rosa lind Goforth. Zondervan Pub. House, price 65 cents). ni. PEACE THROUGH BELIEVING THE WHOLE WORD OF GOD (v. 56). Note in this chapter the frequent B H & B
