says: "Hawks in the sky and snares in the field are equally harmless when we nestle near the Lord.” 23. The “Oh’s” of Our Prayers “Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou w o u l d e s t come down” (Isa. 64:1). R. B. Jones says: “The trouble with our prayers is that ‘oh’s’ are out of them. Cold-hearted and formal, perfunc tory and precise in phrasing, what feeble prayers we now hear! Let the passion of Jesus come into our prayers, . . . the heart-burdened cry of God. . . . The ‘oh’ from the depths of the heart that stirs all the" emotions sets on fire all our longings and fixes our faith. Then indeed will the heavens be rent.” 24. Our Outlook “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever” (Psa. 125:2). A Christian woman in western Can ada was threatened with a severe eye trouble usually leading to blindness. She went East to consult a specialist. When he had examined her eyes, he asked, “What outlook do you have at home?” She told him that she could look into the orchard, oeyond that to the fields, then afar off to the Rockies. The oculist said: “Keep your eyes turned to the hills as much as possible.” 25. Dreading the Unknown “Yea, though I walk through the val ley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” (Psa. 23:4). Host of us have a peculiar dread of the unknown. A little noise in the dark terrifies us. Great dangers which are visible do not frighten us as much. What is so mysterious . . . as “the val ley of the shadow of death?” There are many who trust the Great Shepherd to protect them from all known evils. Why these sinkings of heart concerning this valley through which we must pass to the heavenly meadow beyond? 26. The Test of Standing Alone “Left at Athens alone” (1 Thess. 3:1). Paul loved the fellowship of believers. Imagine his solitariness, a man with such a message, amongst all the unbe lieving philosophers of Athens! A man’s Athens may be his place of business, his appointed field. There God expects him to live and labor so as to recommend his faith to those about him. Can you stand alone? Here is the test of cour age. 27. Our Possessions “Heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:17). This is the believer’s position. Samuel Rutherford used to counsel his friends
