Henry Chairman , History Department, BIOLA College Religion on Campuses A resurgence of interest in re ligion of the nation’s college cam puses has been noted by James A. Lewis, vice president of the Univer sity of Michigan. A t a conference on religious activities in state uni versities held recently at Purdue University M r. Lewis pointed out that more classes in theology were being held and were proving more popular among students. “ The last two years have seen a shift on most campuses from inter-faith and inter religious programs,” he added. Sec tarian interest has been intensified. Most denominations, challenged by a resurgence of campus interest, are expanding to serve more stu dents and faculty members. Wh ile this is true, according to statistics, the Fundamentalist might well ask the question “ What kind of theology is being taught?” Church Spending on Relief Religious forces are aiding the needy overseas with goods and serv ices valued at nearly $300,000,000 annually, according to an estimate released recently b y the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA. The National Council said it was the first survey to be made o f the relief and rehabilita tion efforts of Roman Catholics, Protestant and Jewish agencies. The survey was made b y the council’ s magazine Outlook, and appears in a recent issue. The Council pointed out that the total was “ far from complete.” It does not include for eign mission work with its extensive network of schools, colleges, hos pitals and the like. It also does not include the cost of resettling refu gees in the United States. More over, “ on ly a m inority” of the Protestant denominations are in cluded, although, according to the Council, “ the most important” are covered. Presumably, those not in cluded are, what the Council calls, “ the many small denominations and the so-called fringe sects.” It

Youngdahl, pastor of the M o u n t O l i v e t Lutheran church of Minneapolis, in a report after his return from a visit to that country. Relieved to have been the first American clergyman to visit L a t v i a i n n i n e t e e n y e a r s , Dr. Youngdahl visited five of the churches and had an interview with Archbishop Gustaf Toors, head of the Latvian Lutheran church. The Archbishop estimated that there are 700,000 Lutherans in the country c o m p a r e d to 1,200,000 prior to W orld W a r II. Orthodox clergymen in commu nist-controlled Bulgaria were stern ly warned not to discuss politics from the pulpit, but to concentrate on “ sermons of peace” supporting the government. The warning was issued in a joint letter signed by Patriarch Cyril and nine other Bishops. It was published in Tser- koven V estn ik, official organ o f the Bulgarian Patriarchate. Bulgarian sources in Belgrade de scribed the warning as the “ final act of capitulation,” b y the church, and said it was obviously issued under communist pressure. The Bulgarian sources said that the let ter was aimed primarily at parish priests who have either publicly criticized communist policies, or failed to give them adequate sup port in areas where church influ ence is particularly strong.
