Talks with Teenagers

RULES: You must be 13-19; you must give name, address and ages, but only first name and city will be used. Letters will be regarded as confidential. Send to this column in care of The King's Business. Dear Aunt Betty: 1 am 14, a Sophomore in High School, and a Christian. M y mother showed me an article in the Ladies Home Journal in which a Mr. Harlan Miller has a page. He said he had suggested that teenagers be called “ teen angels” and when he told a friend that idea, he said they should be named “ teen ogres.” Hon estly, you hear so much about teen agers that you are almost ashamed of the word but you can’t help your age. Do you think we should be called something else? Maybe some of the fellows and girls have ideas. Mine is “ B.T.’s” (before twenty). Sammy San Francisco My dear Sammy: Forgive me for reminding you of those beautiful lines in Romeo and Juliet: “What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.” Personally, I like the word. I sup pose that is because I love young peo ple so much and teenage is the age of promise. You are standing on the threshold of life; anything can hap pen! I can remember those happy days “when every bud sweet promise made, of wonders yet to be revealed.” To be a Christian teenager in times like these is a privilege and a chal lenge. Once I read the story of a young man whose father had brought dis grace upon the family. He was asked if he were not going to change his name. “No,” he said with head held high, “ I shall make this name illustri ous so my children will not be ashamed of it.” And he did! Likewise, Christian young people are making the term “teenager” respected because they seek to please the Lord in the things they do and say and are not “ following the crowd” in its sinful ways. However, I am quite intrigued with Mr. Miller’s idea and if any of my readers have names to suggest, send them in and we will print them. I think a word somewhere between “ angel” and “ ogre” would be appro priate.
