I GAVE M Y LIFE FOR THEE Words by Frances Ridley Havergal Music by Philip Bliss At the age of twenty-two, the author was visiting relatives in Germany. One day she came into the living- room and wearily seated herself, Her eyes fell upon a large painting of Christ, with the motto “ I did this for thee; what hast thou done for Me?” She obtained paper and wrote the poem which is now famous. Sometime later Miss Havergal read the lines to an old woman whom she was visiting in an almshouse. En couraged by the woman’s delight, she next showed them to her father, Rev. W. H. Havergal, who was himself a noted minister and hymn-writer. He, too, was delighted with the poem, and immediately composed the tune, Baca, for his daughter’s words. It was first printed on a leaflet in 1859. For many years Baca was used, until superseded by the present tune which was com posed by Philip Bliss. The author was bom in England, December 14, 1836, and died in Wales, June 3, 1879. Although she suffered ill health the greater part of her life, she attained intellectual heights which brought her fame and fortune. She was a brilliant musician and composer, an accomplished lin guist, and could read both the Old and New Testaments in their original languages. A volume of her “ Poetical Works” was published in 1884. She was also the author of “Take My Life And Let It Be.” When in Southern California, attend the Mon day Nite Musicals with Phil Kerr held in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
