An Example of Scriptural Giving Phil. 4:10-18 As he closes his epistle to the Philip- pians, the Apostle Paul thanks the Phi- lippians for their consideration of him in material ways as he went about in the service of the Lord. They had felt their responsibility in helping to support God’s servant and had responded to it. It is the teaching of God’s Word that His serv ants and His work are to be supported by His people. God does not expect the world to support His work. Nor should the church look to the world for help in financing its program. Worldly means should not be used by the church at any time in order to support God’s work. This should all be done by the free will offerings of God’s people. We have left to us a splendid example of how God’s work should be cared for in the build ing of the tabernacle. (See Ex. 35 and 36.) God’s people accomplished it by their free will offerings in accordance with their several abilities. Evidently the Philippians had sensed their responsibility and privilege in fi nancial matters. Paul appreciated what they had done and commends them for it. It was a service unto the Lord and would be rewarded by Him (v. 17). Let God’s people today follow the Philippian example. --------- ■ Helps for the Children A Great Gift Mark 12:38-44; 2 Cor. 9:7; Phil. 4:10-20 Memory Verse: “ Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7). The Lord Jesus had been teaching in the temple, warning His disciples about wanting others to remark about how im portant they were, and about making long prayers just to be heard of men. As He sat there, the Saviour was watch ing the people place their offering in the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much. A poor widow threw in two mites which would be only one-fourth of a penny in our money. The Saviour called the disciples unto Himself and told them that the widow had given more than all who had cast their money into the treas ury. They had given much and still had much left. She had given little, but it was all that she had! God does not count the amount of our gifts but the spirit and the love with which they are given. His heart is re joiced when we give that which costs us something, no matter how little the gift may be. Paul rejoiced when the churches that he had founded helped him financially, for he knew how much that would help them to grow in the Lord. It was in connec tion with the liberal giving of the Philippians that the Holy Spirit led Paul to write the precious promise: “ But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19). Not every one can claim that promise as his own. It was given only to those who were giving their best to their Lord and Savicur. A little boy in his Sunday school class O C T O B E R , 1 9 5 0

placed a dollar unwillingly in the offer ing plate. He was thinking of how many popsicles that dollar would buy, how many rides on the train at the park, how many toys at the corner store, etc. He gave the money only because his mother had told him that he must put it in the offering that morning. God tells us not to give grudgingly nor because we have to, but cheerfully. Giving does not refer merely to money, although that is a very important part of our giving. Any talent or time or money that we grudgingly give to our Lord cannot receive His greatest blessings. Let us give all to Him, small though our gifts may be. Remember that with a lad’s lunch our Lord fed five thousand men plus women and children. Pray that He will be able to bless others through your gifts because they are prayerfully and cheerfully given from love and not from necessity. BIBLE QUIZ ( Continued from Page 2U) 1 . True 9.
