H aircuts provide a very interesting subject for a brief study. The story of Absalom and his hair (the downfall of his glory) has been pre served throughout the centuries. Ab salom, the son of King David, has his obituary recorded in II Samuel 14:25, 26. In all Israel there was no one quite so handsome as he. From the crown of his head to the sole of his foot there wasn’t a blemish to be found anywhere. Once a year he had his hair cut because it was thick and long and needed trimming. The weight of it was measured in the pounds. Have you ever weighed your hair? Did any body ever interview you about your haircut so it could be put in the li braries of the world? Why should God want a story of this man’s haircut to be known by all people everywhere? It is because this short story contains a very important lesson for each of us. Absalom lived for the beauty of his body and the glory of his person. No doubt he spent many hours before the mirror, with manicures, and in bath houses, keeping himself in beautiful condition. God gave him credit for all of that. You know, the Lord always gives credit for anything He can. Ab salom grew lots of hair, however, be cause he couldn’t develop any grace in his heart. He cared for the beauty of

his body but he neglected the develop ment of his soul. He lived a wicked life, he died a wretched death, and he left all his beauty in the grave. What a warning to all mankind. Another haircut is recorded in Judges 16:19. Of course, you recall the incident involving Samson. As a Naza- rite, under the laws of God, he was not permitted to cut his hair. This was a public indication that he had accepted the vows of the Lord and had yielded his life for holy uses. The Holy Spirit endued Samson with un usual strength. He had done mighty deeds and had slain many men. While walking with God, he accomplished God’s purposes. One day, however, in an unguarded hour, Samson fell in love with Delilah, a Philistine girl. She won his confidence and turned his heart from God. (The best of the devil’s chil dren make the worst enemies of God.) Samson confided to this stranger con cerning the secret of his strength. While he slept she had those long locks cut off. He should not have been loving one who was an enemy of God. With his hair shorn the Spirit of God depart ed and left him helpless in the power of his enemies. May the Lord keep us from ever making such a fatal mistake. Let us awaken from the lethargy and sleep of the world, and rouse to the Lord’s battle before us. 31
