To create the Stella Rosa wines, our family chose the region of Asti, a province in Piedmont, Italy, as the source for its aromatic grapes, which have become the hallmark for the Stella Rosa style of wines. The area of Asti has particular significance to our family, as it is the birthplace of our family matriarch, Maddalena Riboli. Our first Stella Rosa wine was Moscato D’Asti, which has become a flagship of this line. Soon after, Stella Rosa Rosso was created – the brand’s first semi-sweet, semi-sparkling red wine blend, and first wine of its kind to be brought to America from Asti. The rapid phenomenal successes of these two wines began the lineage of Stella Rosa, which now boasts over 20 distinctive flavors.

San Antonio Fruit Farm is proudly crafted by Italian winemakers, Paola and Ivana, who share an enthusiasm for both the long-standing traditions of Italian winemaking, and the opportunity to create new flavors, blends, and techniques. Paola and Ivana put an emphasis on the grapes, focusing on the best vinification methods to create the specific characteristics of the indigenous grape varieties like White Moscato, Brachetto and Malvasia. Whilst the majority of Port is now made with modern methods using state-of-the-art vinification technology, a small proportion is still produced by the time- honoured method of treading. Warre’s continues to make some of its Port by treading in stone ‘lagares’ (shallow treading tanks). The Upper Douro is one of the last places in the world where traditional treading has been maintained. This is not done to entertain visitors but quite simply because it continues to produce some of the best Ports. However, the old lagares require manpower, an increasingly scarce resource in the Upper Douro and temperature control is difficult. In order to address these problems, Warre’s winemaking team developed the world’s first purpose built automated treading machine.

Our Medalla Real Gold Medal has a very deep purple ink color. The nose is rich and full of dark blue fruit like blueberries, blackberries, dried figs and some soft spice notes. The wine has a sweet attack and a rich mid palate. The mouth has intense rounded ripe tannins that create the prominent backbone that leads the wine into a long creamy dark fruit finish.

THE STORY The year was 1924. It was the heart of the Prohibition Era and wine’s darkest hour when it was outlawed and deemed unconstitutional. From the beginning, we focused on looking for the best grapes. It was never about shiny new equipment or a fancy cellar. Tyrrel and I used to drive around looking at vineyards every weekend, talking with the grape growers. Actually, it was Tyrrel that did most of the early negotiating—I stayed behind in the truck because as an American guy with a strong accent, I wasn’t the person best suited to convincing farmers that we were deserving of their grapes. It was important to win their trust if we were to win their best fruit. As we eventually found our footing, the MAN project became a collaboration with the grape growers, and today they are shareholders in our company. We are very lucky to be in partnership with experienced farmers who collectively grow some of the best old vine Chenin Blanc in the country.
